GET RED OF MITES Mites are blood sucking inand live and breed in the cracks and crevices on or near the roosts and nests in poultry houses. Apply a heavy coat of carbolineum or cresol dip to the cracks and crevices on the roosts and dropping boards or on the back wall of the house about a foot above or below the roosts. Crankcase oil and kerosene, equal parts, have also been used, but this makes a dirty mess and does not last very long. Any of the material should be painted on early in the morning so that it will soak in before the hens go to roost at night. sects FALL COLDS Most flocks of pullets will show signs of some cold shortly after they are housed and start to lay. This procedure, the dry salting" method, consists of applying a mixture of copper sulphate and sodium dichromate in powder form to the surface of freshly peeled green posts and freshly sawed green lumber. The mixture of these ehemicals dissolves in a humid atmosphere and clings to the surface of moist posts and lumber when' applied as a powder. The method results in deep penetration of the preservative which appears to be firmly fixed in the wood so that it is not readily leached out A definite advantage of this process over any father now available is that treatment can be concentrated at the ground line and top where more protection against decay is needed. Tbe resulting posts have an attractive blue color which is not readily leached out and tests Indicate that the preservative is relatively noncorrosive to staples and wire. Small Amount of Salt Needed by All Pigs After several years of tests, the Missouri experiment station has found that hogs having free access to salt consume an average of only a fraction of an ounce per head daily. However, this small amount of salt caused these hogs to make much faster gains than hogs fed a similar ration without salt. The tests indicated that the best way to feed the salt is free choice in mineral mixture.
