Show I I WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, SEPTEMBER 21, 1978 Ugdsr The Wig By DAVE WIGHAM Were Upset; What Is A Sports Upset? By DAVE WIGHAM Pf,rt Journallsm wr,wKinldor fwrite alike. As number two sports a result what one writer calls an upset might not be to another. Yet in every paper one picks up the word upset always seems to appear. JUST WHAT is an upset in football? Is it to say that one team was upset in terms of being mad because they lost. In other cases does the word upset mean they shouldnt have lost according to that writer. Just what do they mean when they say upset? Last week is a prime example. Using three the Logan Herald, Ogden Standard Examiner and the good old Davis County Newspapers. news-paper- - Box Elder KAYSVILLE of players to "graduation and the Bees have a new head coach but the rivalry with the Davis Darts is still on this year. This years version of World War II will be staged at the Davis stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Jost a lot s, NOW WEVE got the papers lets pick the How about Viewmont at Weber, Woods Cross at games. Bear River and Bonneville at Bountiful. Tthe Ogden paper picked the Weber club to win, this reporter said all along the Vikings would win this one. Ogden called it an upset in their paper while I still maintain the right team won. Did Viewmont upset Weber or did the Vikings simply beat them? LOGAN SAID the Bears of Bear River would beat the Woods Cross club, this reporter said the Wildcats were too good for the Bears and that Woods Cross would win the game. Did the Cats win the game outright or did they upset the Bears as Logan called it? Ogden picked the Bonneville club to beat the Braves while I went with Bountiful in this one. To me the Lakers upset the Braves while the Ogden paper simply feel the Lakers won the contest. THIS ISNT a thing that just stays with the high school team either, the college writers and even those in professional sports get into the act. Missouri upsets Notre Dame, or Tampa Bay upsets the Vikings of Minnesota. Everyone has an upset. The ironic thing is that the teams never look at it as an upset. Each high school team goes into a game wtth confidence, so when they do win it comes as no surprise to them and the term upset isnt used. Yet those around the stadium will always consider it an upset one way or the other. EVERY ONCE in awhile two teams will meet that some reporters will indicate are equal then the upset concept is thrown out. An example might well be the Layton and Bountiful game each year, these two are almost equal each year and no one really picks a winner. So the next time you read about one team upsetting another, temember in a paper somewhere the game wasnt an upset. BY THE way last week was my first at predicting and I hit four out of five games, the only one I missed was the Bountiful game. That was an upset. This week, I'm a glutton for punishment, I see it this way. BOUNTIFUL WILL beat Roy, Layton will down Viewmont although it wont be as bad as many think it will. Davis will beat Box Elder, Woods Cross will knock off South, and Clearfield will down the Sky View club. Anything different happens and you can bet on a few teams being upset. Or is that getting upset? LAST SEASON the Bees were loaded with talent and quite a few of their players found their way onto college teams this year. Most missed, not by opponents, will probably be their great kicker Dale Money who is now kicking for Utah State. A year ago anytime the Bees crossed mid-fiel- d they were a definite threat to score at least three points but this year they are like other high schools and have to get closer for the three-pomte- r. The new head coach at the school brings some impres- sive credentials with him. Larry Findley comes to the school from Burley High School in Idaho where he led his club to a 3 mark a year ago. Prior to the Idahd club Coach Findley was head man at Poway High in San Diego where he turned a losing 6-- program into two consecutive league titles. FINDLEY spent the summer studying films of the Region Four clubs and then refused to sit down with his assistants to go over personnel, his reasons were COACH sound in that he felt like every player should get an equal chance from a new coach. His main concern was that every player realize that in order to play for him they had to give 100 per cent all the time and be a team concept player. In their league opener a week ago the Bees ran into a highly rated Logan club,, several people are picking the Grizzlies as the team to beat in region action, the final score of indicates just how tough the Bees can play. 13-- 6 other side of the ledger the Darts got off on the ON THE right foot by downing a stubborn Ogden crew on the Tigers home field, something that isnt done too often. That makes this weeks game even more crucial for the Box Elder club, two losses in a league like this and you can kiss the championship goodbye. Last year the Bees postmark and yet placed ed a third behind Ogden and throw touchdown passes. These two along with fullback Kevin Criddle give the Darts a very explosive backfield. wing offense under those Homecoming Uesif 1970 At Jepperson and Sophomore Mike Martinez are both looking strong at the leader and 190 pounds spot, at Martinez has the size to be a great quarterback and the coaches are still throwing the idea around of using Jepperson as a running back. Glserield 6-- 2 REEVES, a big senior, is back in the backfield for the Bees and gives them some experience in the skill positions. Mike Hinchman, 0 170, is also back from last year where he saw limited action but an illness had set him back a few weeks but hes just now starting to get to full strength and speed. Robert Ash (6-- 4 210) and Dave Hewlett (6-- 0 200) and the leaders of the lineman, both played some last year and are being counted on heavily for a successful year. Kevin Weels and Brian Braithewaite will also see plenty of action on the line this season. MALCOM 6-- 2 6-- DEFENSIVELY THE Bees are still searching for key personnel but players like Craig Smoot, Ken and Kevin Keller, Ray Parkhurst and Mark Thompson are strong performers at this time. For the Darts the good word is that Todd VanBrocklin is back at full strength at the quarterback spot and that brings a smile to the Dart faithfuls. With Todd in the backfield the Dart offense opens up completely with his throwing ability. Mike Moun-tee- r has shown he can do everything from his wingback spot, run, catch passes and By DAVE HANSEN f of Homecoming Week this years homecoming royalty. Wednesday evening the student council presented a movie for all the students. The movie was held in the Clearfield High School Auditorium. THURSDAYS ACTIVITIES will be highlighted with the annual homecoming parade. This year's parade promises to be one of the best ever with nearly all school clubs and classes sponsoring entries. The parade will begin at 7 p.m. at the high school and run along Main Street in Clearfield to 300 North Street. Following the parade all present and former Clearfield High students are invited to a stomp and party to be held at the high school. Fridays activities begin at Ossie HCF038G Op, Llay Como - FARMINGTON The Davis County Department of Health environmental health division has asked for an increase in the monthly gas reimbursement fee because of increased gas costs. BUT BEFORE taking any action, the county commission has directed that a memo be sent to all departments asking what funds are necessary for transportation costs incurred in using personal vehicles on county business. The health departments letter said the present J136 per month isn't sufficient with the American Automobile Association and other groups paying 21 cents a mile for gas and vehicle maintenance. An increase to a month was requested, averaging out to about 18.75 cents a mile compared to the present fee of about 15 cents a $150 mile. STATING that funds were available in the health department's budget for the increase, it was suggested in the letter that the higher rate be paid effective Sept. 1. But County Commission Chairman C. E. Bill" Moss said, I hope they can put with the present rate until January 1. The flat monthly fee is paid to employees making continuous extensive use of their own vehicles. A per mile reimbursement is paid those making only occasional use of private vehicles in their jobs, tb E. THEN IN the Bountiful and Bonneville game an official blew a call on a punt. Bonneville had punted the ball and as John Luddington of Bountiful waited to catch it he was tackled and the ball hit the Bonneville tackier on the head. No flag was thrown. When the Bountiful coaches protested no call, the official explained (hat no fair catch was signalled for. On a punt a fair catch doesnt have to be signalled for, the kicking team has to let the receiving team catch the ball. Again a mistake in rules, not judgement. For years Jim Hill of Bountiful was the arbiter in charge of officials and he was a man that officials had to impress before they were assigned varsity games. This year the new man has given some officials a shot at the big time and quite frankly some of them arent ready. For example in the two games I witnessed last week the officiating was bad.
