By DAVE WIGHAM With all Ihe fuss the si hoot board has been making over the tost of high school sports it seems funny to me that they haven't made a few simple i hunges IT WASN'T until the 410 yard dish that the Bountiful hum got a fust in the running events. Sky View had won both hurdles along with both the UK) and 2.0 yai d d.i .In s I OR rXAMPI E, why dont they si hedule the different sports, espei lally in the spring, with eat h other1 By this I mean why tan t the ttai k team go on the same Inis as the six i er and tennis t tub to play15 the way it's set up now the suiter teams play on one day, the tennis on another and traik yet a third that's three trips It's not uncommon for example to have a six cer game betwei n Layton and Viewmont at I nylon on Monday A tennis mati h between the two at I ay ton on 1 ui sday and a traik meet with the same schools on Wedm sday. Mark Millward and Gary Blown give the Bravis a (me Iwo fmish in the mile down south THE BUS situation brings up another interesting problem All the coaihes have to get a spenal driver's license in order to dnve the team bus But then the Dis tru t has a rule th it they cant drive that bus more than to miles So when Bountiful goes up to Sky View the District has to pay a driver rather than letting the oach, who is qualified, drive the bus If its money theyre talking in athletics, there's one aspect thiy can cut down on BOUN III UI Christiansen, Begay and McDonald gave the Vikes the first sweep in the mile then Geliy Gibs, Begay and McDonald duplicated the sweep in the two mile Gibbs is considered one of the top runners in the region, he is the most consistent point getter for the Vikes VIEWMONT'S only other first place finishes came rti the shot and the javelin Scott tden won the shot with a toss while Carl Pond took the javelin with a throw of 148 of 48-- feet. Brad Gibson gave the Vikes a second place finish m the javelin also One of the top features of the day was in the hurdle three one rating in the state THE weekly poll taken among soccer coaches the Vikes have slowly but surely taught the eye of the pollsters and las! week the Vikes were ranked Number One by those coaches Kevin Peck, Dave Fames and Kent Gmes are all back for their third year of staler at the school All three are starters from the past two years All three are returning Ali Slate players IN SINCE starting their career at Viewmont these three have seen a lot of action. In their sophomore year the Vikes VIEWMONT got a couple of second places out of John Skedros in the 880 and Marty Ford in the high jump Dale Boren took third in the high jump for the Vikes The Vikes other points came from George Jacobsen, third in 220, Matt String-fellow- , third in the 410, and Mike Buttars a third in the long jump ROY SHOWED their power and depth by winning all three of the relay events Each week the Vikings are improving their times and finishes, they know they dont have a lot of depth but their individuals are working hard and improving THIS COMING week the are hosting a meet on Saturday and hope to have some individual winners Vikes MOPEES. - With smeer team has taken over the number I . - fun and economy while the two mile 'Ihe two teams stayed Hue to fur m in Ihe relay rates with w inning the 4 10 mil mile with the Braves taking the medley t.ne Bountiful s winning time m the medley, in whuh Iwo runm rs inth run 220 yards, annther a 4 SO and the final runner a 8v), was 3 71 5 Sky View BOUNITIUL wasnt completely whitewashed in ihe sprinung events, junior lax Murray plated third in Ihe 120 high hurdles, sophomore Si oil Sharp was Hurd in the 2.10 hut die i vent, and another sophomore Neville Allen was third in the 100 yard dash The Unheals weie p'cked to place fourth in the league. They won the league and got to the state finals before dropping a 2 0 decision to Orem Last year as juniors the Vikes were again in the state playoffs They were the only undefeated team after two had them games but a mix-uplaying again They actually finished third last year despite beating both Highland and Prem who placed above p them BEING IN the state tournament, and in the final, has become a habit with these three and they would like nothing better than to leave the school with a state title Gines is considered by many to be the best goalie in the state this year. He also could play on the forward line, he has great fundamental skills, but his worth in the goal is too much FARNES IS a solid defensive player who is like the Rock of Gibralter back in his own half Peck is a very fast forward who has played both winger and inside forward With these three as the nucleus, the Vikes well deserve their ranking Steve Carlson is a returning starter from last year in the defense as is Bob Shegrud Wayne Jameson and Kim Bullock are back on the forward line Glen Dalton, who was plagued with injuries is also back for his second year SHEGRUD AND J a meson are members of the hockey team that won the last two slate titles so they know what it takes to win all the marbles Simmons, Kay Mixisman and Brett Boyle aie first tuners on offense Mnnsmnn has been the surpnse of Ihe team turning into a high storing forward in his first year of comjx lition THE VIKES are sail upset over the state tournament last LLdiU Li Ml Li Come on in $25 , Off on each MOPED Purchase FREE BASKET Main-Layto- 825-945- Otter Good 25 OFF Til April put Smith and Junior Jm1 fit lining ini k si i ond and third in the di a us and senior ( lair Assay da( eij seiond in Ihe high jump and third in the long jump 1 ' i great competitive team and some years you just don't have it.
