Show i I WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, MARCH 16, 1978 Layton Ends lip And Down Year By DAVE WIGHAM LAYTON - Last week the basketball season came to a close for the Layton team as they bowed out of the state tournament with a couple of losses, one to East and the other to Kearns This was a season which began in uncertainty for the Lancers. THEY werent sure what type of club they would have returning to battle in the newly aligned Region One Gone were the big names like Johny Gilbert and Cal Roberts The guard line was back from the previous year but the search was on for the big people to play the forward positions. Coach Doug Moon had some good prospects, it would just be a matter of time to see which one fit best in what position. After all thats what coaching is all about isnt it FROM the pack, following some experimenting, the trio of Brandon Flint, Rory Dixon and Anderson Gordon appeared f lint was a starter as a sophomore the year before, they knew he could play in any league Dixon was a great jumper who could shoot from the outside. Then came the surprise of the year for the Lancers in the play of Anderson, a slender 6'5 junior. Anderson came in and did a great job of rebounding and scoring for the Lancers and things started to fall into place when he came around and became a permanent fixture in the starting lineup GUARDS like Carl Woodward, Ben Bubak and Rick Snow are tough to find, and to have all three on the same side is a great asset. If one or the other is off or in foul trouble then the other one can fill m. Woodward was the best shot of the three while Bubak and Snow liked to use their quickness for the penetrating drives SO AS the league opened up the word was that Layton A LEADING SCORER - CLEARFIELD Although the team as a whole didnt do as well as they had hoped to do, one of the Clearfield Falcons had a great state tour- nament for Coach Roger Reid ALL YEAR Scott Wallace has been the scoring machine for the Clearfield club. He went into the Salt Lake tournament carrying an 18 point per game scoring average, that made him a marked man for the opposition to shut bows. Wallace really doesnt have a preference on the type of player that guards him. He admits that to him they come in two types, the big physical ones like Brandon Flint of down. Despite playing only three in games the tournament Scott managed to finish sixth in the scoring race totaling 73 points in those three encounters Thats pouring in Layton and the small quick forwards like Scot Pendleton of Bountiful. Either way Scott says he still plays the same game MR. WALLACE will be the first to admit that a great deal of his success has been as a direct result of some of the around 24 points per contest despite drawing all that attention on offense. e SCOTT Wallace is a player, one who had to learn how to play both ends of the floor. self-mad- Allen B Carter, son of Mrs ning, Ga Flta M Trotta, 1768 N. 2900 Clinton, recently was promoted to Army specialist four while serving as an ambulance driver with the 197th Infantry Brigate at Ft. He still isnt known as a defensive gem but his coach will tell you that he plays hard aggressive defense underneath the bucket. Both Brian and Russ can about anywhere in front court, that means teams have to guard them closely and under the score from just offensive patterns that we run get open a lot because of them. "My best shot has to be the fifteen foot jumper from the wing spot. The offense we run I like gives me that shot a lot playing facing the basket on of offense, 1 feel Im more of a threat that way. Besides if you play with your back to the basket you need a good hook shot and I dont have one."
