Hats in Hand As these gentlemen arrived in Washington with hats in hand and tears in their eyes, begging for financial assistance from the gov eminent, we wonder what they would have said had President Roosevelt told them: I believe that you need assistance. I believe that the government must act in order to save the nation and its people; but in our platform adopted nine months ago we said we would reduce expenditures, and therefore we must stand by that declaration even though the gov eminent itself should fall. WRIGHT Certain dynastic accumulations of wealth and power have grown up in the United States and around them there has formed a ring of public opinion which is critical, hostile and mighty intelligent. Perhaps the first of these was the Rockefeller structure called Standard Oil. Hate of Standard Oil reached its peak with the Ludlow massacre. Then Standard Oil hired Ivy Lee and the Rockefellers, pere and fils, were put through a series of paces calculated to turn away wrath. But the record of the Amalgamated certainly gives no substance to such a claim any more than does that of other unions. Solidarity of Labor A warning against disruption within the ranks of labor and a forceful plea for solidarity are voiced by William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, in an editorial appearing in the June issue of the American Federationist. There was never a time when more special causes were bidding for labor support than now and never a time when unity was so indispensable to the welfare of labor, the editorial said. Pointing out that the whole spirit of the labor movement is that of group solidarity and that loss of unity would deprive wage earners of their collective economic strength, the editorial stressed that the movement must serve the interests of the whole group in order to achieve its true purpose, as follows: The labor movement is the agency through which wage earners can act collectively through which they can use their united power in the .advancement of high- many different kinds. These men put empires of wealth together, without regard to what happened to men in the process. Trace the building of Standard Oil, of U. S. Steel and Bethlehem; and of the great aluminum combine. Union men help them to maintain their position and their power It is one of the great contradictions in by buying their products. American life. Men who fight for the union label on clothes never think of asking for it on a cigarette. One of the most powerful weapons in the hands of labor is in the spending of money. Labor has a right to spend its money for the products of union workers. More than that, it is a matter of principle and duty. The grip of tyranny can be shaken if labor will use its buying power to the full limit for the purchase of things made by union labor working for fair and friendly manufacturers. Have a cigarette?
