At the conclusion wildfires affect air quality, traffic conditions across Castle Valley region Two Two fires burning outside Carbon County boundaries have affected the air quality and traffic in the local area during the last couple of weeks. On is the Big Canyon fire burning about 30 miles southeast of Price in Emery County. The Six Mile fire is being allowed to burn for forest restoration purposes near Manti. The United States Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service vehicle traffic has expanded greatly in the area because of the growth of the Big Canyon fire. Suppression efforts continued last week as the Merrill Saleens type two incident management team assumed management of the fire suppression efforts. After burn-ou- t operations created an unusual oloud of smoke, more resources were brought in to improve lines on the new fire boundaries, noted the federal agencies. With the additional acres burned and the larger number of resources, a more complex management team was needed to handle the incident. The new fire resources arrived at the Incident Command Post on Tuesday evening. The resources included the new management team, additional hand crews, and air support. The lightning caused fire is located in Big Canyon adjacent to Desolation Canyon approximately two miles south of the Carbon and Emery County border, and had grown to approximately 3100 acres by Wednesday. The Fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management Wilderness Area lands. The reduction in the reported acreage burned is due to more accurate mapping. Saleen stated that the gen- eral control objectives for suppressing this fire include; firefighter and public safety, keeping the fire contained to the south side of Three Canyon (away from the Green River and east of the Dilly Creek Canyon), structure protection, and minimizing natural resource impacts on adjacent wilderness study areas. Firefighters continue to be challenged by extreme conditions which include steep terrain, dry fuels, and varying weather conditions. Last Thursday, residents were concerned about the smoke filling the Carbon County area. Rumors were passed around town that a fire was threatening the old mining town of Hiawatha, but the blaze was located more that 60 miles away in Sanpete County. The fire area, located five miles southeast of Manti is closed to recreation use. The lightening caused Six Mile wildfire had burned approximately 400 acres by end of last w'eek. The fire continues to be managed to accomplish resource objec- tives outlined in the mjanage-meplan of the Manti-L- a Sal National Forest. The plan, allows naturally ignited fires to burn within designated use areas under specific management guidelines. Under the conditions, a fire is allowed to play its natural role on the landscape. By utilizing the management tool, fire officials and resource managers will accomplish benefits to wildlife forage for mule deer and elk as well as reduce the build-u- p of hazardous dead or downed fuels. The Six Mile fire is being monitored daily. Fire managers will review the progress of the fire and may take appropriate suppression action in order to protect life and property or reduce the potential for localized soil movement. No suppression action has been taken to date. Smoke from the fires may be visible for the next few weeks, depending on weather conditions and fire behavior. Fires are generally most active during the late afternoons, when temperatures maximum and humidity is lowest. nt Emergency Preparedness Fair of the proceedings, the court ruled the evidence presented at the preliminary hearings sufficient to show probable case the defendant committed both offenses and held Jones to answer the two first degree distributionarranging the distribution ofa controlled substance counts at felony arraignment in the criminal complaints on Sept. 7.
