We also desire to make it plain that we are not trying to appropriate the name, subscription list or good will of said paper, but purely do this in courtesy to the good people of Hyrum, , Respectfully, Publishers of Cache Valley Herald, Logan, Utah WHO OULD GET THE WORST OF IT? Our profits would increase $12,000,000 a year if we could get the American sugar tariff removed, says the president of a great Cuba sugar corporation. ' The profits would be derived at the expense 'of the American sugar t beet growers who have been using their farms and their labor on a crop that pays them, that builds up home industries of every kind, that insures the nation against foreign monopoly. Once the American sugar industry was destroyed, the Cuban corporation might form a combine with other foreign sugar-marketo make American sugar prices as they were during the war five times the price at which sugar now sells to the American buyer, hut not a penny going to the American producer because there would be no such producer left. Occasionally a farmer breaks out with the cry that the tariff is a burden and not a boost to his industry. Lucifer, not satisfied with the order in Heaven, went off to start a hell where he could theorize without restraint. But every evidence is that he gave himself the worst of M rs it OUR GREATEST ft ft PS ASSET We see it estimated that common colds cost the ''United States one billion dollars annually . This is based on a government report that of the 42,000,000 workers there is an average individual loss of eight days each year through illness caused by common colds. It seems an awful price to pay, even if we leave out the fact that many of those common colds develop into something more serious, and death results. We are now passing through a dangerous season for colds, and will be for the next few weeks. So we hope that insofar as this particular community is concerned more than the usual care will he taken by our citizens to ward off the common colds. Not that we care so much from a financial standpoint, but we do not want to lose a singldresident from causes that could have been prevented. The debt and taxes of state and local governments are increasing more rapidly, than the debt and taxes of the national government are being reduced. State and local taxation constitutes an important part of high cost of living. ( Reduction of local expenditure and taxation, is one of the surest methods of reducing the cost of living in any community. v SOCIALISM UNDERMINES DEMOCRACY If all business men in the land were thoroughly imbued with the fundamental principle, that gov eminent ownership in any field is socialistic, destroys 'democracy, brings an oligarchy into political power, then no local business man would hack any such scheme, however apR. For further information, address the Logan Chamber of Commerce. A NATURAL TRADITION Logan, the metropolis of Cache Valley, is the finest little city in the west. Over 10,000 happy, contented people live here. It is the home of the National Summer School, and a real community. THE BUILDER An old man, going a lone highway, Came at "the evening, cold and gray To a chasm vast and deep and wide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fear Jor him. But lie turned, when safe on the other side, And build a bridge to span the tide. Old man, said a fellow pilgrim near, You are wasting your strength by building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again will pass this way. Youve crossed the chasm deep and wide; Why build you this bridge at evening tide The builder lifted his old, gray head. Good friend, in the path I have come There followeth after me today, he said, A youth, whose feet must pass this way. This chasm, that has been naught to me, d To that youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim. Good friend, I am building this bridge for him. Conway (Ark.) Spring brings to the auto drivers around Logan a desire to hit the open road. And when they get out they find it is closed for repairs. A new broom sweeps clean unless a new bride uses all the straws seeing if her cake is done. Maybe if there were about ten days in a week we could rest up between Sundays. Our advice to all Logan men is to take care of their teeth. Brush them occasionally and never call a man a liar if he is bigger than you are. One great evil of the radio is that burglars cant start to work before two or three oclock in the morning. Just wishing things would change is about like striking a match to the thermometor to make the room warmer. The Logan men who longs for the old days forgets that they used to put a fellow in jail for being in debt Now is the time to start talking about how poor you are. The family may want a new car next spring, spring. Congress has voted $3,900,000 to catch rum runners, which seems to be about $1 per runner. From recent observations , Logan learning to drive slowly seems to be harder than learning to drive fast. A puzzling thing about some divorces is that they didnt happen sooner. We often wonder why some Logan citizens don't have a Grouch Week and get it out of their systems. 1 s Funny thing about some public officials is that they are sworn in and then cussed out. The robin is praised for coming back but no one seems to think of cheering the sparrow that never goes away. Glancing at present-da- y we wonder what the styles Here's our own weather forecast for the balance of the year Loud wet and dry squalls every month. In most instances when you see a Logan man acting like a lion down town it is safe to bet that his wife does most of the roaring at home. RARE MEDALS ARE FOUNR NEAR SMITIIFIELD SMITHFIELD, July 8.
