THE LAW OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND After what has been done to the country during the past two years or more, reference to the law of seems little supply and demand, better than a sort of historical retrospect. But the industrial board, which has been appointed for the purpose of securing an agreement upon prices on a reasonable basis, and their stabilization, is evidencing a confidence in their ability to get away with the job, that is admirable. The purpose' of the board as stated in the official announcements, is to call industry together t group by and let them decide on group, prices to be offered to the Nation as the Governmentally approved judgment of assembled industry on a price scale low enough to "he stable, homogenous throughout the whole fabric, and founded so solidly on a comprehensive review of conditions as to eneourage general buying, including that of the railroads and other Governmental agencies, and the resumption of normal act- ivities. The business groups of the nations responded wholeheartedly to this kind of a proceedure at the outbreak of the war, and the fixing of prices by the Food Administration was done voluntarily under Mr. Hoover, pretty much in the same way that the industrial board, working under Secretary Redfields Department of Commerce seeks to do at this time. ' It is carefully explained by the industrial board that it will not fix prices, but the Government seeks to use its influence to establish what a stable and wholesome it calls scale of prices, by means of which, to .quote the statement farther, the cost of living wilj have so far been reduced as to create automatically on the price of labor without interfering with American standards of ideals for the treatment and living condiiions of labor, and thus the last inflating element will have been withdrawn from prices. The statement certainly was prepared by optimists, and every one will wish them luck in carrying out its well meaning intentions. It is believed, continues the statement, that industry will agree that the cost of living must be substantially reduced before labor should stand the first shock of readjustment.. The general impressions of careful observers of the industrial situation appear to be agreed that there is an eagerness on the part of the business interests of the country to cut the throttle open but that the hestitancy in carrying out such a program is due to the possibilities - Opinion of an Englishman Catdrrhal Deafness Cannot De Cured cannot reach by local applications ux they ear. Big words! consider them people sharp weapons and try to use them in encounters with the defenders of the League of Nations. But the defenders have the courage to press against these supposed swords, find, that instead of being pierced and annihilated by them, the swords are nothing but paper, and crumble up on pressure. They are words, not realities. Territorial integrity has almost never been maintained. Transfers of territory have continually occurred. What about Russias possession of Alaska? What about the recent sale to the United States of the Danish Islands? There was no injustice in the transfers of this territory. Most transfers of territory, however, have occurred by war, and the rule is, even though e tha return to France of war was the by exception which proved the rule, the rule is, that transfers of territory through war have usually meant greater injustice than through purchase or arrangement. Being able to grab something that you want doesnt prove that you have any right to want it. It has taken us four bloody years to show Germany this and yet some of us dont seem to have learned it for ourselves. Certainly, territorial changes are inevitable. Any plan which tries to keep things forever as they are is a plan which opp'oses progress. Transfers of territory will continue to occur. The question is whether they would better occur through the rulings of a League of Nations or through war. Cant you endure the idea of a League of Free Nations with the power to discuss and recommend of sudden price fluctuations or the uncertainty regarding wages. Therefore it is very reasonable to assume that if the efforts of the industrial board are successful that we may look forward with confidence to the time when the law of supply and demand will have returned to its place on the pedestal of commerce and industry.
