Show TWO DEATHS AT HARPER last wednesday evening the 2001 dinst the spirit ot of john sampson of oe harper ward was called home after a struggle with ith the grim reaper tor for two months the cause of death was a complication of heart and stomach trouble accompanied by par alisis for many years sir mr sampson has been managing 11 II C bakers lake view ranch and was a frequent visitor to this city where he was well known the sad feature of the passing of mr sampson is that he leaves a 1 wife and 9 small children two of whom were born to him by a former wife who died a number of years ago deceased was born in conaval Conn Conr val wall england sept 1837 1857 and came to this country when a young man of IS years lie he located in pennsylvania whore where he labored in the coal mines for a number of reals coming to utah he became associated tied with mr baker in ill the mines cast of lake side where be has labored since mr sampson was an honest mean man and had a kindly interest in his fellow men those who lived neighbors to him knew better of his vit ali hies than anybody else for withal lie he was unassuming in his nature going quietly about his own business imar impressive funeral services wera held in the harper meeting house sun stin day forenoon presided over by bishops counselor joseph gibbs there was a large turnout and the following speakers referred to the good qualities ot of the dee deceased eased and spoke smoke words word 9 of comfort and consolation to the bereaved family thaddeus Thadd eua wight PIP bp thomas wheatley joseph gibbs denmark jensen and J francis merrell the singing was furnished by the ward choir the hallwas hall hal was waa beautifully dew tt coray tod ted and ana a wealth ot of flower s bovere d the casket the remains were interred d in tile the harper cemetery after many weary months of suffering oll which time the hopes of his loved ones were moved up tip and down with each days experience as his condition changed the spirit of bishop thomas yates of harper was released horn its earthly tabernacle of 0 suffering and pain and called home saturday morning about 1030 dishop bishop yates was taken ill abot 4 t months ago and while ills his case has been considered serious bioni the beginning gl nning it was anly during the last few weeks that hopes for ills his ultimate recovery had begun to wane the trouble with which he suffered was dropsy and blood poison of the I 1 ie e e ills suffering was intense but ills hii fortitude was sublime and he cheered those about him constantly with the faith that he be would get well As a man thomas yates was admired by all who knew him as a neighbor lie he was loved as a citizen lie he was waa respected and as aa bishop of his ward he was beloved as a father As in de fatIgable worker both in a secular way and as aa a churchman lie he believed in the sentiment that what is worth doing at all Is worth doing well ono glimpse at his premises and faim at the nature of the proprietor etor and he be carried out that trait in all that he did in life one of the old residents of Il harper arper bishop yates was a familiar figure all along the string and in this city which he frequently visited lie he was public spirited aud and took an active part in the up building of the community com in which he lived lie he was devoted to his religious roll con vict dictions ions and during ills incumbency as aa bishop of harper the hie ward has pro grassed and the people have been it cited ile he has fought 1 a good fight and gone to illa hla rest there to meet the loved ones of ills his family who have gone before thomas yates was born in wai wae england may 17 1810 ills his parents accepted the gospel in their native land find and thomas was waa baptized in june 1851 lie elder county lie he spent two years in california then lie he came north and bought a home at harper ward and settled there where he has since lived in he married jane gaty baty ten children have ItT blessed essed this union four I 1 0 t whom prece proceeded eded him to the other world ile iio was the grandfather grand father ol of twenty three children four of which are dead 0 on n february 20 1909 lie he buried his wife on march 29 lie he was chosen as counselor to the bishop of harper ward and un until til november 20 1899 held that position when lie he was selected as bishop of the ward which position lie he filled until his death ile iio leaves one son and five daughters to mourn his loss funeral services were held in tile the harper meeting house tuesday at I 1 p in the house being filled filed to overflowing with friends and neighbors who met to do lionor honor to the memory of a good man the stand was draped iu in white and flowers in profusion were used in doco decorating co
