Show NOVEMBER 10, 1987 L, anDaDiras Did one bad break cost Davis the game in quarterfinals? By GARY R. BLODGETT Sports Editor SALT LAKE CITY When playing in the State Class Football tournament, the winning team is often the one that gets the 4-- A breaks. Davis High's Darts had one bad break go against them, and they ended up taking it on the chin from a real good grid team from Orem, 25-- 7 in the quarterfinals at University of Utahs Rice Stadium. The score may not be indicative of the game, since the big, bad break came in the third period with the Darts trailing and the Orem Golden Eagles threatening to score. But the officials call could have been the turning point of the game. It happened late in the third and quarter with Orem ahead driving for a touchdown. But Davis Mark Sargent made a beautiful interception of an Orem pass just inside the goal line. 4-- A 0 10-- 7 Heading upfield all alone, Sar- gent dropped the ball and then attempted to recover. He was on the ground with the ball between his legs when an Orem player made the hit, jarring the ball loose. The Orem defender recovered the ball and the official gave the Eagles possession on the line. Davis Coach Jim Dickson argued that Sargent had possession and that the Orem defender should have been charged with a late hit. As a result, fullback Russell Lamoreaux plunged into paydirt 10-ya- rd on the first play from scrimmage. The was good and the score read 17-- 7 as the third period ended. But taking nothing away from the Eagles. The undefeated Region Two Champions (7-- 0 for the season) outplayed the Darts statistically and took advantage of the breaks. Lamoreaux was the kingpin for the Eagles as he rushed for 175 picking up yards on 25 carries six more yards than the entire Davis backfield. His longest run was for 46 yards. Orem rushed for a total of 220 yards compared to a commendable 170 yards for Davis. Running back Bryan Emery had a gainer and rushed for 69 yards in only five carries. Fullback Sean Smith pounded out 67 yards on 15 carries, his longest being for 18 yards. Jeff Kinard, who suffered a minor injury, picked up 37 yards on 12 carries and scored one TD. Key defensive plays kept both teams from scoring in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Sargent intercepted a pass and returned it to midfield. The Darts failed to move the ball and punted to the 10 yard line. A clipping penalty on the punt return placed the ball on the 33-ya- five. At this point, linebacker Neil Bingham recovered an Orem fumble on the two, the first big break for either team. An offside penalty against Orem placed the ball on the one from where Kinard plunged Running back Jeff Kinard follows the blocking of Sean Smith for good gainer against Orem, undefeated in Region Two. Kirk Conners booted a field goal. The Eagles wrapped up the game and advanced to the semi-finaof the Class championships by intercepting a pass on the 2 yard line and marching 88 yards for a score with 6:30 left in the game. 7-- Roof caved in on Falcons 23-ya- Granger capitalized on miscues to defeat Clearfield By GARY R.
