Show NOVEMBER 3, 1987 L. losses suffer Wildcats Utes win; Ags, Cougars, By GARY R. BLODGETT Sports Editor 24-1- 4 BYUs Cougars have apparently found what they have needed to keep their hopes alive for a shot at the Western Athletic Conference football title. They have found that someone besides Bob and play it very Jensen can play quarterback well. Sean Covey is the young lad for the job, at least for the time being. Hes a returned LDS missionary who has the poise, proper attitude even if he lacks the exand determination perience. That will come later. Sean proved himself last Saturday afternoon as the Cougs held on to a victory over the U.S. Air Force Academy at Provo. The must win for BYU knocked the Cadets from being a top contender since the loss was the second of the WAC season and its team will emerge the not likely that a two-lo24-1- 3 well-deserv- ed ss champion. But neither will just one loss at this point of the season guarantee the Cougs are any other WAC team the 1987 grid title. There are still one or two teams left in the running. Wyoming has the lead and should be considered the favorite since the Cowboys are without a loss and have beaten several of the top contenders. BYU and UTEP will be looking for someone else to ambush the Cowboys and possibly throw the conference into a two, or tie. even a three-waWhile the Cougars are storming past the Falcons, UTEP stays in contention with a 34-- 0 whitewashing of New Mexico University. But San Diego State surprised Hawaii on the islands with a 1 victory, and University of Utah edged Boise State in a y 29-2- encounter, 31-2- 7. Wyoming kept its unblemished conference entact with a 5 win over arch rival Colorado State University about 50 miles to the south. Thus, Wyoming is atop the pack with a 0 record mark. UTEP is close behind with a e behind the and the Cougars are a Miners with a 1 mark. Air Force still has an outside shot with four wins and two losses, but time is running out. After that, Utah, Hawaii and San Diego State, all with 3 records, along with Colorado State are considered and New Mexico, at out of the running. But any team, on any given afternoon, could spoil things for any of the top contenders. 20-1- 4-- 4-- 1 half-gam- 3-- 2-- 0-- 5, 4, came out on the short end of the score. game to San USUs Aggies dropped a Jose State in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, and Weber State put 38 points on the scoreboard but still lost a 8 tilt to Idaho University at Ogden. The loss dropped the Weber Wildcats from the Big Sky Conference lead and gave the Idaho Vandals undisputed first place witha 1 record. Weber is now 1 in conference play and 2 overall. It was the third PCAAC loss of the season for the Aggies and eliminated any hope of a conference title. San Jose State, meanwhile, climbed atop of the conference standings with five wins and no losses. Fullerton with a 1 mark still has a chance at the title. Utes. And except for the first quarter, the Cougars couldn't have been much more impressive. The highly ranked Falcons (ranked 20th in the nation coming into the game) put on an early show much to the dismay of the 65 ,000-plCougar fans who had come to enjoy a college on a warm Halloween afternoon. BYU dropped behind 10-- 0 in the first quarter in and it looked like it could be a blowout favor of the Academy. The Cougars defense, us top-not- ch for the most part, was impressive, but it couldnt stop A1 Booker who broke lose for a gainer to the BYU-2- . It was a team victory for BYU, but there were some standout plays and players. Covey, of course, has to be credited for doing a magnificant job in his first collegiate start at quarterback. He completed the day with 18 of 29 passes, for 294 yards and one without throwing an interceptouchdown tion. He stayed in the pocket, read his blitzes, and consistently hit his target. Rich Zayas, the speedy little split end, made some spectacular catches, along with David Mills, Chuck Cutler and Darren Handley. Coach Mike Price said, We couldnt run on them like we thought we could, especially with the loss of Fine Unga in the second half. In a way we simply lost our composure... we just blew it. Aggies lose Homecoming It was homecoming for the USU Aggies last Saturday and the Ags were playing the top team in the PCAA. What an opportunity to build on their season record, especially coming off a big win over Utah the week before. But it wasnt to be. The win wasnt pleasant,-no- t against an NCAA Division team. But it would be shameful if the Utes embarrassing, down-righad lost. With a score of there were a lot of s fumbles, penalties and defensive that could have given either team the win. The Utes gladly took the win and went home. Both teams were tied at 17 at halftime but BSU went up one touchdown early in the third period. Utah didnt catch up again until late in the final period on a takeaway pass reception by Curt Jones in the end zone. Utah did manage 501 yards total offense, 315 by passing. We simply lost our poise, continuity and consistency in the second half. The game turned out to be a battle of two real fine quarterbacks who love to pass the pigskin. Aggie QB Brent Snyder had another good day with 30 of 47 pass completions for 384 at one time hitting 17 straight recepyards tions. San Jose QB Mike Perez had nearly identical stats with 32 for 49 and 393 yards. But it was one fluke play that broke the Aggies back. Perez was being swarmed Leading under by the Ags and he flipped a short pass to his fullback about five yards away.
