Show NOVEMBER 3, 1987 SmxiDiPits Falcons edge Bountiful, compete in state quarterfinals Friday noon against Granger 13-1- 2; CLEARFIELD They call the football field at Clearfield High School Falcon Field, but for most of the first half of Fridays opening round state playoff game between Clearfield and Bountiful, the Braves were being treated like guests at Falcon Crest. When all was said and done, ; however, Clearfield was a bit lucky to escape with a 2 victory over Bountiful. The Falcons now advance into the state quarterfinals at the University of Utah this week. Clearfield started fast, as Monte Geertgens returned the opening kickoff to the Bountiful 48, and the Falcons drove to the six before Bill Spangenthal drilled a field goal for a quick 0 lead. Field position played an important part of the first half the Falcons had it, and Bountiful never did. 13-1- 23-ya- 3-- The Braves mounted little offense in the first half, though Bountiful did get into Clearfield territory in the first quarter as Sharif Hadley rambled 16 yards to the Falcon 39. But Clearfield was eating up most of the yards, driving to the Braves 27 and heading for a score when Ryan Jacobs made a big interception on the 10 to stop the drive. Laytons Troy Murray is about to unleash a pass despite defensive pressure being applied by West Jordans Mike Dennis and a couple of unidentified players. Murray was on target all afternoon as the Lancers advanced into the State Class quarterfinals against Skyline Thursday noon at U of Us Rice Stadium. The ensuing series left the Braves deep in their own end, however, and a seven-yar- d punt to the Bountiful 14 gave Clearfield great field position. The Lancers had been riding a high tide until they played Roy in the final regular season game a week ago. The Lancers lost that one and it appeared that the Jaguars just might pull a big upset in this playoff same, , West Jordan took possession on the Layton 40 after a nice put return by Brett Molen. On the first play from scrimmage, Wilson Kauvaka ripped up the middle and rambled 38 yards to the two. It seemed that the Lancer defense didnt realize just how fast fullback the 1, could run. He almost left the Lancers in the dust but was finally overtaken just before he reached the end zone. Roger Richardson gave the rambling fullback time to catch his breath by moving the ball to the one. From there, Kauvaka plunged over for the score and West Jordan was ahead 0 with 5:35 left in the first quarter. Layton, unsuccessful in its attempt to move the ball on the first series of downs, took the ensuing kickoff and moved steadily down-fiel- d for 74 yards and a touchdown. This drive looked like the Lancers of old as quarterback Troy Murray connected on a pass to Rick Sparks to the 37 yard line and two plays later hit Chris Trujillo at midfield. Tom Moore then rambled to the Jaguars 37. A late hit penalty moved the ball to the 22 from where Murray again hit Trujillo on a nifty sideline pass ... 235-poun- ot d 7-- Rodeo, queen contest OGDEN Golden Spikes annual Beauty and the Beast queen contest and rodeo were announced today by the Golden Spike Empire Committee.
