Show Falcom Forum: gang slang By BRADY NIXON As the football and volleyball teams head for state competition, and the basketball season is draw ing near, it is essential for parents to learn high school game slang. This dialect is foreign to everybody except high school students. If you hear it, you might become confused. How could such elementary phrases be such an insult to the other team? Parents, community, and administration. .. "Get aclue! You should know by now that whatever we say has some kind of message to it. Messages that only other students will understand. But in all fairness to you, let me try and explain what we really mean. A very popular term used when we make a great defensive play that makes the other team look dumb is, Sit Down! But you dont just say, "sit down. You have to be very obnoxious, slur the two words together, and accent the word sit. In order to get the full effect of the slam, you have to point sharply at the ground several times while you say it. This simple sentence has a very complex meaning. Basically, this lets the athlete or team know they have been publicly humiliated by themselves. Sit down, preferably on the bench, and hide yourself from society, because if I were you. Id be too embarrassed to even show my face in public. Another form of grieving, extremely popular during basketball, is yelling You, You, You... Naturally, this too must be accompanied by the pointing finger. My personal favorite that is more of an insult to the referee is Get a job! or, Get a real job!" This lets the officials know that anybody could be doing a better job than they are doing, So do the job youre paid for, do it well, or get a real job.. .off the court! From booing with your thumbs down, to loud and obnoxious sounds, to grunts and whistles, its all the same. Its all a type of school spirit that is in everybody.
