Isnt that harmful for the baby? Yes, drinking when pregnant can be harmful to the baby. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is now considered the third most common cause of mental retardation due to birth defect in the U.S. Doctors often suggest that pregnant women abstain from all alcohol from conception through delivery. When a pregnant woman drinks some of the alcohol passes to the child by way of the placenta. In extrame cases babies have been bom intoxicated or suffering from alcohol withdrawal symptoms. My wife seems to be developing a drinking problem since the children went back to school. Ive called a few times in the middle of the afternoon and she doesnt make sense. Our cocktail hour has also grown from one drink before dinner to two or three. The children have even noticed it at dinner time. Shes a wonderful woman but this problem is getting worse and I dont know what to do. Your wifes drinking problem was hidden during the summer because the children were there to occupy her time. But when school started she had the free time and has filled it with alcohol. I dont know if your wife is alcoholic or not but if you are concerned then you ought to talk with an alcoholism counselor. Learn about the disease of alcoholism and what kind of help is available for both the family and your wife. Intervention is often used as a means of breaking through the denial of the alcoholic. After all, Edwin Drood had captured the Tony Award in 1986 for best Broadway musical, and City Rep would be the first Utah company to get a shot at it. They have taken full advantage of that shot. The companys production on Second Stage at the ZCMI center combines all the elements of a very entertaining evening: music, melodrama, and wonderful audience involvement. The setting for this play is the mythical Music Hall Royale, where a group of English actors have gathered to portray the story. Thus, we see the musical unfold as a play within a play, complete with a stage manager who keeps things moving and an emcee, chairman, leading us through various scenes and introducing cast members to the audience. Edwin Drood is based, we are told, on an unfinished novel by Charles Dickins, in which a handsome English lad, betrothed to a lovely miss, mysteriously disappears after a violent confrontation with a number of guests at a dinner, of course on a stormy night. Because the novel was never finished, we are surplanted with numerous clues and suspects during the opening act, and then as the musical concludes, audience members actually vote for the suspect of their choice. The fun of Edwin Drood comes as cast members try to convince us of their guilt, each hoping to be chosen the murdered that night. Thus, this play has several different endings, requiring cast members to learn various roles as murderer, detective, and love interests. If it sounds a bit complex, it is. But this group of thespians has no trouble entertaining as well as conveying the essence of Edwin Drood. Mearle Marsh is wonderful as the dastardly John Jasper, uncle of Edwin Drood, portrayed here, as on Broadway, by a lovely actress, in this case talented Jennifer OHaley. David C. Maxwell, another veteran of City Rep and other local companies, is marvelous as chairman William Cartwright, who keeps the audience involved, and does a great job with a tonguetwisting scene with Bruce Bredeson, who plays town resident Durdles. Other cast members delighting audiences are Patti M. Olsen as the beautiful Rosa Bud, Mary Davis Wilson as Helena Landless, Geoffrey Bennett as her heartthrob brother Neville, Duane V. Stephens as the popular Reverend Crisparkle, and Catherine Evans as the Princess Puffer. A strong supporting cast gives this musical plenty of life as well. Edwin Drood is directed by Stephen Wertz, with Mark C. Reis handling the choreography. It is , above all else, a lot of fun for everyone, because like many plays these days, the audience gets intimately involved. The production continues at Second Stage on Thursday through Saturday evenings through Halloween. Call the Salt 1 for more information.
