Show MAY 12, 1931 THE JOURNAL What's Your Favorite Fruit Apples and oranges appear to be the favorite fruits of most U. S. homemakers, according to a sample survey of consumer pref- erences, reported by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, U. S. Department of Agriculture. About so per cent of the women interviewed said they preferred one fruit to all others, and. of these, one in three favored apples and the same proportion favored oranges. The survey was made to help producers know what consumers want in order to market their fruit to best advantage. Apple crops have beer, larger in recent years, but as more aput ples have been produced, more have gone unused. For example, the commercial apple crop in 1049 to about 133 million bush3 million bushels were els. and 0 not harvested because of low prices. The sale of apples has been handicapped because fewer have been exported in recent years yet imports of other fruits have been in1 creasing. The chief reasons given by the women interviewed for preferring apples were: taste, usefulness, versatility and health. Most women said they bought apples once or twice a month. More eating apples and general-purpos- e apples were bought than baking or cooking apples. Typical purchases of special type apples were: 10 pounds of eating apples; ten pounds of general-purpos- e apples; 7 pounds of cooking apples, four pounds of baking apples. Prices paid were from 10 to 13 cents a pound. More than half the women said they would have bought more if prices had been 3 to 4 cents a pound low- 5 Increasing Use Of Park Areas Poses Problem With increasing public use of national forest areas and watershed lands in Davis county, officials of the Wasatch National Forest recently expressed concern over the problem of maintaining adequate sanitation control and fire prevention patrols. Faced with mounting costs and reduced appropriations generally, the Forest Service is faced with inability to keep up the standards that will provide adequate safeguards for prevention of fire and health. During 1030 Wasatch Forest officials point out that some ."2,000 visits to Mueller Park and Farm- -' ington canyon recreation areas were recorded. This is double the use these areas received four or five years ago and as the population of Davis county gains further increases may be expected. Farmington Canyon and Mueller Park are the only two developed outdoor forest recreation areas in the county and these are used primarily by Davis county residents. Similar problems have arisen in other densely populated areas in Utah and solutions have been either in the direction of assistance from local governments or the recreation areas have been turned over to private individuals to be operated on a lease basis from the government with a charge made to the public using the areas. A study is now under way in the county on this problem between county peo-- : pie and the Forest Service to deter- mine the best solution. j the returning hero, heading a long parade, waves to cheerdid their best to keep an estimated 5,000,000 thousand Seven car. his from crowds policemen open ing and ticker tape showered over the line of march. of bits In a billion while admirers paper order, seemingly ur, to General of the Army Douglas medal of was the welcome the citys gold presentation Highlight of of the Commander in Allied Powers defense to as victorious him the which was inscribed Supreme ( International ) of honor and liberty and the fundamental principles on which free institutions rest," MaeARTHUR DAY IN NEW YORK MAKES HISTORY as Mac-Arth- Top Auto Salesman AN AGED KOREAN POINTS THE WAY er.
