And he was glad to hold down his Job though he worried about it occasion ally. Worried for fear he might lose it. " Yhen he had been with his company two years, and felt he had learned a good deal about the business, the manager of the branch in which he was employed suddenly resigned his position. It is worth while, in considering' what' we have and are, in this great republic, to look back to the shores of Virginia, in the year .1607, when the English people established the first permanent settlement in the new world. The landing, near Cape Henry, on April 26th, was followed by the laying out of Jamestown, and since that day the destiny of the American republic was thrown in with the fate of other English-speakin- g peoples. Before the fact became convincingly established, bitter warfare raged with the Spaniards and the French, both seeking to gain domination over the lands found by Columbus and those who followed him. It might be a good idea, in this day, no doubt, to reflect "upon what a vast difference it would have meant to us, as a people and a nation, if the Spaniards or the French had ousted the early English and taken over the great area we now embrace. Gone would be our most cherished traditions of justice, freedom and popular and the institutions would have been nothing like what we which we revere i f BADLY ENGLISH SETTLERS self-governme- ! nt DISORDERLY DEMONSTRATIONS The other day nearly two score men and women picketed the home of the welfare commissioner for the City of New York because they were dissatisfied with his decision in regard to some individuals receiving relief. j We. thoroughly support the right of Americans to petition their government but this business of picketing public officials is something else agaimThe picketeers are and thoroughly organized and their plain effort seeks to intimidate officials. It 'seems to us that such action amounts to a threat against the public order and those who engage in it are guilty of disorderly conduct. The 'same observation applies to the picketing of foreign embassies by those who dislike some policy adopted by a foreign country. A protest staged in an auditorium may be entirely proper, but when the same demonstration is set before a mans home, it creates a different problem. In time,, the government of the United States will have to meet this problem and take action to prevent hoodlums and hooligans from running roughshod over the forces of law and order.
