At the store where I do most of my grocery shopping, the baggers go to school at our arch rival. If we beat them, I love to go in and banter with them while they bag my groceries. Its such fun. , They dont want to talk about last nights game, but I insist. I stand there in my old sweatshirt, proud as a peacock, and ask what they thought of the contest. They give me dirty looks and I supress my smile. Help me out with these bags, I say. Im tired from celebrating last nights victory. It was such fun. Did you see the game? I stand tall while Im talking. The old sweatshirt makes me feel good; although battered, it seems to take on a glow in those situations. I cant remember the origin of the old beauty. Im sure I got it free. Ive had it since you were just a pup; got a lot of use It makes Saturdays more out of it, too. As I said, pleasurable. The sleeves are ragged and the collar is worn. Theres a big stain on the A that goes back to the day I wore it to get pizza with the team. The dry cleaners said the spot was caused by a combination of cheese, pepperoni, and pineapple. One Saturday after we clinched the region championship, I wore it into the barber shop. Do you coach at East? they wanted to know. Well, sorta, I said proudly. Nice shirt, the barber lied. I like it, I agreed. Everywhere I go, the shirt becomes a conversation piece especially if we win. The great thing about the shirt is its versatility . You can wear it anywhere, like fishing or mowing the lawn or to Little League games. You pan sleep in it on cold nights, or wear it up the canyon to a barbecue. I dont like to dress like other people. I want to be my own rugged self. You wear a tie. I want to be comfortable. You go ahead and lode sharp. I want to be casual. Take away my Sunday suit, but leave my sweatshirt alone. SIMONS SAYS: Just because you have two sweatshirts, its no sign you are leading a double life."
