Keys and trophies will also be given out during the ceremonies at Copper Days in Magna. Rick Blackerby Magnas Crown and keys Rick Blackerby is an artist who transcends mediums and style. He feels equally comfortable making Egyptian style jewelery as he does with a drawing or silk screen. He was commissioned to make a special copper crown for Miss Magna to pass down, and also copper keys to the Magna community. Some pins were also designed for the Magna Royalty. Kennecott, Hercules, Union Carbide, and Utah Power & Light all contributed to the cost of making the artwork for the Copper Days ceremony. Rick considers himself a naturalized Utahn but actually came from Oklahoma. He started drawing and making toys as a boy. He was trained at the Philbrook Institute of Art and also received a BFA from Oklahoma University. Rick works on designing artistic jewelery to pay the bills, but he enjoys metal sculpture. His sculpture is representational abstract and he also does a lot of classical work. Rick was commissioned by the Denver Art Museum to design an emblem and card. He designed two repousse processional crosses made of silver, copper, and brass on wood, reminiscent of art deco. Rick also designed one processional cross of wrought iron with stain glass inserts. cubistic in style. The crown is done in a repousse process. Thin metal is given volumn by working both sides of the metal with ball tools. The pins were made by using the lost wax process. The keys were first carved in wax and then put into a mold. The mold was put into a furnace and heated to 1300 degrees farenheit, which eliminated all the wax from the mold. The mold was later filled with molten copper and the key was formed. Currently, Rick is working on a painting of acrylic and enamel, and a revolving three dimensional sculpture of mirrors. Rick also has a number of commissions from as far away as New York which provide him with work year-roun- d. The keys will be given out to Governor Bangerter and the three Salt Lake County Commissioners. During the Copper Days ceremonies the Magna Merchants Redevelopment Association will be presenting Magna Beautification Awards to some of the beautiful homes in-- Magna.
