Romney, secretary, D.Utah Mining Clyde and right, tells Gov. George Centennial, Mitchell Melich, president, Utah Mining Association, left, as he demonstrates the old and new in mine lighting equipment. Mr. Romney holds up a miners candle dating back to 1860s and early carbide lantern, while modeling the very latest in mining headgear with attached electric lamp. g Gov. Clyde this week signaled one of the largest observances in state history by officially proclaiming 1963 as the Centennial Year of Mining in Utah in recognition of the location of the first mining claim, the preparing of the first of the first mining district mining laws and the organization in the state. More than 20 historical, religious, educational, business and government groups will participate in Centennial activities during the year. Gov. Clydes proclamation pointed up the vital relationand ship which mining has had with the economic growth welfare of our state and its citizens . . . impressively demonstrated by the officially reported value of Utah mineral products reaching a cumulative total of more than eight, billion dollar ia 1962." 1863-196- 3, year-lon- Antique Search Under Way A search for these antiques is now under way, headed by Mrs, O. Preston Robinson of Salt Lake City. Mrs. Robinson is experienced in this type of work, having worked on the Heber C. Kimball home in Nauvoo, 111. The state hopes to acquire some of the original furnishings used in the pioneer homes, but any authentic pieces that are dated before the turn of the century will be used. The furnishings dont have to Mrs. be in perfect condition, Robinson said. If they are not too badly warped and are in fairly good shape we can refinish them. Needs Are Listed At the Stagecoach Inn, theres a particular need for old beds, wash stands, water pitchers and a long dining room table. Were also looking for pioneer kitchen utensils, quilts, lace curtains, spinning wheels, candle-maker- s, and anything else used by Utah people around 1877, Mrs. Robinson continued. She added that anyone ested in donating furniture or obtaining information on the project should write or contact her at this address: Christine H. Robinson, care of the Utah Park Commission, Union Pacific Annex, Salt Lake City Other Dates April Utah. In commenting on the plea for antique furniture, D. James Cannon, director of the Utah Tourist and Publicity Council, said, Donors will be doing their state a great service.
