Show THE AMt AMERICAN RICAN A large audience assembled at the theatre last evening to hear mr charles Charlea ellis lecture on the american government ern ment the subject was handled in the lucid manner characteristic of the lecturer he began by defining etymologically mo logically an and politically what the words republic democracy and representation sen tation meant representative government was well illustrated by the methods adopted in large business corporations po rations where the stockholders assembled and delegated to certain individuals authority to conduct and operate the business of the concern mr ellis then went on to the pol divisions ja in the territorial our ot geographical sense he took up the township county states state congressional district and finally the federal government ern ment and showed how each though semi independent yet was allied and operative cooperative co with all the others othea in order to fully illustrate the formation of a state he gave a historical synopsis of the origin growth and cevelo pant of pennsylvania from a british province to a full fledged state of the american union he also gave a brief resume of the events which led to the final adopt ift of the federal constitution I 1 i I 1 in the course of his lecture mr ellis touched lightly on our civil war and the causes which led to it he also condemned the use of titles when applied to american officials as an contrary to the letter and spirit which begat the american republic the chief executive of the nation was pimply limply mr president the chief eVecuti executive ve of a territory or state was simply my mr governor therise of the word excellency cellen cel lency cyP was entirely redundant and indicated a spirit of snobbery the officers of the american government were simply the servants of the people and were paid for their work the same as any hired help in the kitchen or farm if they did not do right the people should turn them out it is in supposed that the model of our government was that of england mr ellis showed that this belief belaef was abao cutely ungrounded oft wot fut the idea from which the american union developed was first begotten in holland when the dutch republic was established the number of flemish refugees that settled in england aur ing the persecution under philip 11 II disseminated in that country the principles sciples of the puritan and pilgrim arthers F fathers I 1 and it was this spirit which ultimately u idima tely materialized ma aerial iced in 1 n our ou r republic reau alic at the close of the lecture mr george Georgo goddard sang hard times come again agai n no more the rho genial old gentleman eitleman ent leman was introduced by mr ellie ellis as ad an old boy not the old boy but a man who had carried carriea his boyhood with him through life who would carry it with him through the grave and who would enter the great hereafter singing hard times come again no more 11 the song gong was highly appreciated by the audience many of whom joined to in singing the chorus the lecture for next sunday night was announced as a commentary on Al american merican political parties with some scene attention to the present democratic and republican parties mr ellis ellie was suffering from an attack of pleurisy and spoke at times under serious difficulty he made a suggestion in regard to the duty of the honest voters of the city in the approaching pro aching election that was received with great applause but his closing word to the present legislature brought the house bouse down in great shape if any of the legislators were present they could not fail to get a hint as to the wishes of the large audience assembled sem bled although the night was extremely cold outside the theatre was almost too warm it was announced that mr tho as with the cambrian glee alee club would ring ing next sunday night |
