Show DEATH OF FRANK H DYER the budde suddenness duess of the death of ex united states marshal dyer at his hie residence south sixth east beast street in this city at a few minutes past 7 last night was a matter of profound surprise to the public as it was wag not generally known that he was wag afflicted with any serious ailment several months ago mr dyer had a severe attack of peritonitis perito nitie and was wag confined to his room for two or three weeks A consultation of physicians was held to consider the advisability of performing an operation it was however decided that the use of the surgeons surgeon Is knife at aba that time was not absolutely necessary and with the ap of the usual remedies the disease was wae apparently broken up and mr dyer returned in a short time to his bis regular business but always entertained grave fears that the dreadful malady would return early in february of the present year he be went to washington with a dele gation of prominent democrats of this city to advocate before the con gressional territorial committees the passage 0 of f the home rule bill subsequently 1 y he visited his birthplace relatives and friends in mississippi is and returned to his home in this city on I 1 the he ath instant on tuesday last he was again attacked with his old complaint from that time until his demise he became steadily worse but it was not until yesterday that his bis recovery was doubted A second council of medical men was called by dr ewing the family physician it consisted of drs allen alien fowler pinkerton Wea meneham eliam and plumber after a careful diagnosis of the case it was decided that but one alternative remained and that was to perform an operation it was conceded that the experiment was a most dangerous one and would probably result in death but as it meant death in the other case as well mr aad mrs dyer both willingly and heroically assented to the operation being performed before this was awas done however mr dyer called in his bis legal adv advisers isem mears P L williams lams and judge henderson and gave directions as to the disposition of his property in case that the t operation shou d be unsuccessful he e remained cheerful and talked freely while the necessary papers were being prepared at mr dyer was placed under the influence of an anesthetic and the operation commenced dr di pinkerton using the knife As soon as the incision was made the physicians announced that recovery was impossible and the sad intelligence was communicated to iad mrs irs dyer and family at the patient showed signs ot of returning consciousness and opened hip eyes and looked at the watchers at his bedside he was however unable to speak and again fank fank into a comatose condition and at 7 he expired without a struggle biographical mr ayer v vas as born in yazoo county mississippi on september ath 1854 his father was killed in the service of the confederate army his airet firt t wei men venture was wag in the newspaper field in 1874 he purchased the yazoo city DeMo democrat financially the enterprise ter prise w was as a failure but mr dyer re carded it as to use his own language of went to bingham and engaged in mining he donned a work workman mans dress and for months worked at a windlass in drawing precious metals from a shaft abaft one hundred and twenty five feet deep his working hours were from 11 p m to 7 aa a ni ai later he commenced prospecting pec ting oneff one of his claims he be sold for sufficient money to engage in the livery stable business on the ath of july 1882 he married miss min ella pavey by whom he be has raised three children one boy and two girls mr dyer also engaged in the coal business and drove a team himself in the cue spring or of 1883 he be sold his livery busl buei ness nees in moved all his bis freighting outfit to park city where he had secured i a contract for handling the ores of the crescent mine although ough others had bad been losing money handling this at per ton he be made a great deal of money at he next built the crescent tramway tram way which la Is five miles long and was wao at first operated opie rated by mules but mr dyer soon concluded this was too expensive and went east and bought a si degear all traction locomotive abic which h he put upon the road and ran it the first brat two or r three months himself it is interesting to know that this is the steepest grade f rade in the world where a locomotive is e run by traction the grade being feet to the mile it is in successful operation pe ration however to this dy day in april 1886 mr dyer was aal ap pointed united states marshal of utah by president cleveland and held that office until the election of president harrison when he sent in his bis resignation on november 7 1887 he was appointed receiver of the confiscated property of the church of jesus christ of lot latter day saints his final accounts were settled and his compensation fixed and allowed on OB july 1889 from that time until the present mr dyer has resided in salt bait lake and his faia career as a citizen and successful business businessman man is well and favorably known he was president of the salt bait lake giss gas company of the salt lake power light and heating company and a heavy stockholder in many of the thriving business busi nees enterprises of the city he was an active worker in the field of politics and was one oneff of the first brat democrats of the territory to declare in favor of division on national party lines the funeral services dver over the r remains of the late prank frank H dyer occurred from the family residence yesterday afternoon after nOOD begin beginning aniag at for sev ral ml hours prior to that time the casket had been standing ton on a bier on the lawn where the remains were viewed by hundreds and perhaps thousands of people who knew and respected the deceased during his lifetime at the rev mr lane ascended the porch of the decease ds late home and read the episcopal funeral rite he was listened to with rapt attention by a vast assemblage A male quartette consisting of goddard whitney and spencer then sang beautifully 1 11 I neau thee every hour they were followed by mr lane who offered prayer after which miss bynder sang in a clear full voice we shall meet beyond the river 22 the rev mr lane again arose and in a brief address dwelt eulogistically eu logistical ly upon the life and character of the deceased judge borrell norrell followed in a si strain amin saying that the task of speaking over the rent remains ains of his much luve I 1 friend was the most painful gainful duty of his life As boys boya they had been friends as men they had bad been friends the deceased had ever been a man asiong men who paid a glowing tribute to the deceased the containing all that was mortal of frank H dyer was then lowered into the grave the floral tributes were elegant and numerous |
