I r rH U The SUSC baseball team lost its ninth game in a but picked up its first two victories of the season Friday and Saturday against Division II Eastern Oregon State, to move its record to Thursday, the Birds continued tournament play in Mesquite, Nv. with a game against the University of Utah. The Utes picked up 17 runs in a third inning en route to an 18-- rout. Everything they put the ball on was a hit, said Head Coach Bill Groves. It was a coachs nightmare. It was embarrassing. We told (the club) it needed to meet the challenge, said Groves. Kendall Bennett took the mound Friday afternoon against Eastern Oregon State, recording 10 strikeouts and going the distance for the 3 victory. The Birds enhanced the winning feeling Saturday in a second game against EOSU. SUSC emerged with a win. Freshman Dereck Hope recorded the win. The Birds scored four runs in the first inning due to a Joey Sturges double that started the rally. Through 1 1 games, Kyle DeLange leads the Birds in hitting with a .400 average. His 780 points places him 12th in career scoring. Randy Simkins moved his free throw percentage up from .483, and his rebounding mark from 4.0. Last year Simkins averaged 3.6 points. Robert Nakken improved from the field and in rebounding, but dropped in free throws and points. THUNDERBIRD MENS FINAL STATISTICS 9-- 6 Fans ideas varied One individual suggested a strip show as preferred halftime entertainment during basketball games in an SUSC athletic department survey given Feb. 27 at the final mens basketball game. The majority of respondents said the current 7 p.m. was the preferred starting time. Halftime entertainment ideas were divided between Waukeenyan performances, high school dance groups and free throw contests. Other suggestions included student contests, a money scramble, womens throwing, and a strip .gymnastics exhibitions, show. Response was overwhelmingly in favor of scheduling mens and womens basketball doubleheaders. When asked about music, most preferred a pep band, while others suggested everything from Country and Western to Polka. Only 122 of those completing the survey said they listened to Thunderbird road games on the radio, and 91 admitted they did not. Almost half of the 106 who said they had attended every Bird home game were Athletic Club members, while only 1 1 students said they had been to all 10 games. rt |
