Show THE THUNDERBIRD MONDAY OCTOBER 12, 1987 PACE 7 L - 2o BY KRISTINE GARNER "I am probably the most casual, informal, seat of the pants manager that you will ever meet in the business," said Larry H. Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz basketball team and several car dealerships, as he spoke at Convocation Thursday. Prior to owning his own car dealership, he spent 15 years in the business. He said, "To me, the funnest part of the car business today is working on the parts counter." Miller said his retention skills were good, but when it comes to sitting down and writing something out, he can't do it. Miller said he feels that this has a lot to do with the management style he has developed. He told the audience that he had a hard time learning things at face value. "I had to learn by experience. Learning by experience is expensive, but it is probably the most effective teacher." A secret that this basketball team owner suggests, in becoming successful, is to hang in there, through thick and thin, and good things will come through hard work. There is one decision everyone has to make, according to Miller. That decision is whether one wants to be poor, mediocre or good. "We are our own most severe critic; because, we see all of our faults, and other people only see some of them. Give yourself the opportunity to fail or make mistakes without giving up on yourself," he said. "No matter what field of endeavor you go into, give yourself some credit for tools and skills that you have within you," Miller said. There is one university in this state that has implemented a writing across the curriculum program and that is the University of Utah (and might add that at least two of the schools contacted to confirm this statement stated that the program at the University of Utah was courses in their more a series of writing-intensiv- e humanities and liberal education program exactly like the humanities courses we plan to implement at SUSC next year or departmental writing courses exactly like we have developed in certain schools and departments here at SUSC than an actual writing across the curriculum program). To develop their program the University of Utah received a funding grant in the amount of $200,000. Brigham Young University has a program of third year focused writing courses in the area of the student's specialization that are taught by faculty in the department of English, but the woman I spoke to regarding that program stated that she was "unfamiliar with the term or concept of writing across the curriculum." "SUSC has the weakest foreign language requirement for the B.A. degree in the state of Utah. All other state institutions require 25 credits of foreign language, SUSC requires only 15." While this statement is not exactly true in fact (Weber State College requires 24 hours of foreign language: BYU requires 14 semester hours, or 21 quarter hours of foreign language for the B.A. degree), it is true in spirit. Presently we are the only four year institution in the state requiring a single year of foreign language for the B.A. degree. I I However, as is reasonably well known to most faculty and students, this is a perceived weakness and is presently under debate and consideration for change. Department chairs of the School of Arts and Letters have discussed this weakness; at the next meeting of the SUSC faculty senate an initial discussion of this topic has already been scheduled. have been told by one dean that the Dean's Council is merely waiting for a d proposal for their action. It is well known that our college provost openly supports the raising of this requirement. The implication that SUSC has committed itself to developing programs based on illusion rather than substance is simply untrue. There is, in fact, a concentrated attempt at this institution to upgrade our programs, course offerings and faculty. But there is no magic available to make this happen overnight or by next week; that is an illusion. Finally, and acknowledge a great deal of hesitation is stating this in print but I feel it is an important point and should be made, think railing for the sake of railing, attack for the sake of merely being heard, and arrogant rhetorical stances based on faulty assumptions must be seen for what they are, and, more importantly, what they are not. Intellectual and academic respect must be earned; and to be earned, that respect, that integrity, must be based on fact and an honest, inductive examination of the matter at hand rather than whim, and preconceived and rumor, generalized opinion, whether it comes from a professor or the author of a popular, but rather trite and overrated book. Such an intellectual stance should not be confused with a studied, academic opinion, and such a stance does not benefit this student body, this faculty or this institution. faculty-generate- MUSIC Your Music Store 588 South Main. & More!
