' Due to a conflicting film schedule, Stephen who first gained fame as Animal House's Flounder, couldn't make it to SUSC's Thursday Convocation. Lana Johnson, Convocation coordinator, said Furst had other responsibilities for his television series, St. Elsewhere. Instead the audience was introduced to the former "Big Guy," Gordon Jump. Jump, known for his role as Arthur Carlson on WKRP in Cincinnati, spoke to a large convocation audience about the television industry and how it touches people's lives. "It doesn't make any difference what endeavors you make, it's how you touch the lives of other people," said Jump. FJe shared a personal story as an example. While as a guest on a national radio talk show, he received a call from a truck driver, who was calling from a phone booth. The truck driver told a story on how Jump saved his life. The phone caller said one day after coming off of a truck run, he found a note from his wife saying that she had left him. FHe sat down on the couch, turned on the television, and WKRP happened to be on. The episode was about a Thanksgiving turkey promotion. The truck driver Furst, .13 it . Following a friend's advice, Jump quit his job at a broadcasting station in Ohio to pursue acting, something that he has always wanted to do. Jump told his friend, that he was going to California to become an actor. "I told him I can't sit behind a desk without doing what want to do. If I fail, I can come back to this desk and feel comfortable," said Jump. According to Jump, his Arthur Carlson character on WKRP was modeled after that friend. WKRP, to Jump, was an accomplishment in itself to get off the ground. When WKRP was first started, it wasn't successful. The network put the show in an early time slot, although the material of the show was more The actors were mostly unknown. After four or five shows, it was cancelled, but the network decided to put it back on. It was put in a new time slot, following I adult-oriente- d. MASH. "After five weeks, it was the number one show in the country," Jump added.
