Show THE SUMMERBIRD BJIbEfairy tops list New SUSC to seek $38.5 million; A new Library and physical plant facility and a renocation of the Science Center top the list of capital improvements to be sought by SUSC at the July 10 meeting of the State Board of Regents to begin the trek through the winnowing process to the 1988 State Legislature. The $13.2 million Library and $3.4 million physical plant facility will join projects totalling more than $200 million submitted by the states other eight colleges and universities. Capital facilities requests, funding proposals made to improve the existing buildings on campus and to build new ones, have previously been approved by the colleges Institutional Council. According to Michael D. Richards, vice president for college relations, the process is a lengthy one where necessary improvements and new building requests are first submitted to the Institutional Council, then to the Board of Regents, then to the Governor, and then to the State Legislature. Each request is subject to approval along each step of the process and if the requests are approved, they will be acted upon after July of 1988. A new Library has been deemed the most critical need for SUSC. Currently, the Library consists of 22,500 square feet of space that must meet the needs of more than 2,800 students and contains adequate seating for only five percent of the student body. In addition, the present facility is far behind national and state standards for a college of ff Library, food. The Gathering Place will be in the City of Festivals, Cedar City, Utah. Under the sponsorship of Southern Utah State College, the Gathering of the Clans will begin with a regal processional of the participants in the Festival celebration. At the processionals conclusion, the Scottish tournament begins, piper against piper, dancer against dancer, athlete against An additional request will be made to build a new motor pool, receiving department and shop space, to be located at the southwest end of the SUSC Stadium. Richards cited the need to make the motor pool more secure, the need for more shop space and the dangerous situation of gas pumps being subject to the movement of heavy equipment as the reasons for this $3.4 million request. Other long range requests in the capital developments area will include an addition to the business building, a new classroom and laboratory building, an addition to the industrial education building, and an addition on the physical education building. size of the old one, consisting of 82,000 square feet of usable space and has a base construction cost of $13.2 million. Festival patrons will be treated throughout the day to a variety of authentic Scottish foods, and booths filled with crafts, crests and jewelry. The day will conclude with a spectacular Scottish Tattoo in the Colleges Centrum. The Tattoo, with its unique blend of performers, is the result of more than 300 years of development. The origins of the Tattoo go back to 17th century Holland when English troops were billeted with townspeople. To signal the soldiers to return to their quarters for the evening, a drummer marched through the streets beating his drum to tell the innkeepers to turn their taps. The proposed new Library will be four times the Gathering of the Clans slated here on July 1 1 The myth and majesty of Scotland will come vibrantly alive again this summer at the third annual Gathering of the Clans in scenic southern Utah. There, on the second Saturday in July, the traditions of ancient Caledonia will be revived in music, dance, sports, and JUNE 22, 1987 became Anglicized by the troops to tattoo." By the mid 1700s, the tattoo grew into a military entertainment consisting of an elaboration of the tattoo signal by extra music and performances of exercises by troops, generally at night and by torch or other artificial light. The tradition of the military tattoo continues into the 20th century, epitomized by the world famous Edinburgh Tattoo held every year in August during the Edinburgh Festival. In terms of capital improvements requests, construction on existing facilities under $1 million, the number one proirity of the administration is to renovate the Science Center. This renovation is planned in two phases with the renovation of the main building to take place first and then renovation of the geology and home economics departments in the second phase. According to Richards, There are major life safety and dysfunction problems that must be corrected shortly. A request will be placed for $920,000 for the first phase of renovation and $510,000 for the second phase. Additional requests will be made for utility tunnels between the new theatre and the (continued on page 5) Utah Summer Games begin hero (continued from page 1) Monday, June 22, until Saturday, June 27, and events will be held at the Centrum, the Cedar City Middle School, Cedar High School, the SUSC baseball field, Stadium and track and at the PE Building. Some of the major events to be included are basketball, softball, swimming, track and field, a marathon, cycling, gymnastics, volleyball, wrestling, shooting, and fencing. Those wishing to attend the opening ceremony may obtain tickets at the Centrum Box Office, Cedar City Corp., or through the Chamber of Commerce. Tickets may also be obtained at the information booths that will be set up at 2nd North and Main and at Center and 800 West. The price for the opening ceremony is $5, or there are all events passes available for $12. In addition, family passes to see all of the events are available for $30 and are good for up to six people. (The $12 and $30 tickets also include admission to the opening ceremony.) According to Cory Duckworth, legal and administrative consultant to the games, there will be mere than i roo athletes competing in the week long event with three different class competitions in each event. The entries we have received have more than doubled the size of last years event and were really excited about the enthusiasm that has been generated across the state about participating in the games. He also said that the goal of the games is not just to provide an athletic experience for the athletes, but a comprehensive festival experience. There will be an athletes village at Brian Head complete with social events, dinners, and athletically oriented guest speakers. The concept of holding Olympic style games for state participants is not a new one, as 35 states already have their own form of summer competition, but the idea is new in Utah. The Utah Summer Games is the brainchild of SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt, who after attending the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, decided that it might be possible to hold the same type of competition on a state level. He soon found that other states do the same thing and he created the Utah Summer Games Foundation which funds the events. However, according to Duckworth, it would not be possible to host the games if it were not for the tremendous amount of cooperation that occurs between the city, the county, the college and the private sector in Cedar City. Its a real tribute to Cedar City as a whole that we can have enough cooperation to make this a quality event. Cedar City has a history of doing events like this really well; the Shakespearean Festival and the Soviet gymnastics team visit prove that. We will have more than 2,000 volunteers working at the Utah Summer Games and thats by far the largest volunteer effort in the history of the state. In addition, the Games have been a big boost to Cedar City itself. Besides all of the business that will go to local merchants, funds from the games have directly or indirectly contributed to many new or improved facilities in Cedar City, like the new shooting range, extra parking around the Centrum, and improvements in equipment at the middle school. Duckworth also says, Its amazing that there is only one individual who is on the Utah Summer Games payroll, but because of the tremendous amount of volunteer work that the people of Cedar City are able to put forth, this will be a very high quality event that will be well worth attending. Programs detailing the weeks events are on sale for $2.00 at various event venues. |
