Show mv Alumni gridders not over the Hill yet; lose to varsity BY BROOKS WASHBURN The SUSC varsity and alumni football squads met Saturday in a hard hitting game that saw the varsity squad crush the alumni 42-2The alumni surprised the varsity squad by scoring the first time they got the ball. Bob August completed an end zone pass to Juan Henderson, who made a spectacular catch taking the ball away from the defender to give the alums a short but sweet lead. It didn't take the varsity squad long to strike back as they outscored and defensed the alums to take a 21-- 9 halftime lead. 3. The varsitys scored on passes trom Chad Richard to Todd Watts to take a 14-- 6 lead toward the end of the first period and Dennis Wells' interception and retyrn ot a Ben Bubak pass attempt put the score at 21-- 6 for the varsity squad. The alums really put the fear into the varsity when they unleashed their secret guest QB ( Spectrum's Greg Hill) to try to pull the alums back into the contest. He didn't help much, but the alums scored a field goal before halftime to make it a 21-- 9 game but that was as close as they would get the rest of the night. In the second half the varsity put the screw's to the alums, shutting them down offensively and scoring at will to make the game a rout. Thunderbird track team continues improvement Thunderbird sprinter Carl Ward had an outstanding day at Weber State College Saturday, taking seconds in the 100 and 200 meter sprints with a personal best of 10.7 in the 100. SUSC's track squad turned in one of its best collective showings of the year in the meet. Martin Welsh bettered his personal best in the 1500 by three full seconds w'ith a 4:14. In the distances, Jackie Gengler took eighth place finishes in both the 1500 and 3000. will complete their regular season schedule May The 16 in Flagstaff in a meet hosted by No. Arizona University. 21-1- Softballers end season in district playoff action The SUSC women's softball team's dream of a national championship turned into a nightmare as the Adams State College Indians eliminated the 'Birds from further play, taking the district series, two games to one. Monday's opening game was a pitching duel between two s as Adams State's Dee Dee .m Shiplet outlasted SUSC's Jill wobsen for a victory. Shiplet allowed SUSC only three hits in the game. Adams State was able to push a single run across in the fourth inning and that proved to be the difference. With backs to the wall, SUSC came up with six runs in the best-of-thr- i fourth inning of the second game and cruised to a 3 victory. SUSC pounded out 1 1 hits with Jana Crawford, Nan Spiers and Carrie Stelter all picking up a pair of hits. In a rematch of Monday's opening game, Jacobsen and Shiplet squared off again, but this time SUSC was able to get to the Indian ace for three runs in the top of the fourth to take a shortlived lead.
