However, he has several success stories to tell about providing adequate information for those queried (CONTINUED FROM PACE 6) budget increase. More than 825 items were added to the materials collection. With the software collection housed in the learning center, its hours had to be increased. Instead of being available only 36 hours a week as it was during the 1984-8- 5 year, the learning center changed its hours to 80 hours a week the following year. This was done through the use of student workers hired by the Instructional Media Center. This made not only the software collection available for more hours, but also the tutoring and listeningviewing areas. Provost Terry D. Alger later requested that the learning center no longer administer examinations for teachers. This resulted in a decline in the number of students using the area, but made the utilization much more effective. A total of 774 students used this area 1,683 times during 1985-86. Card catalog is boon to all who use Library here's nothing worse than going to the Library to find a book and not knowing how to use the card catalog. Learning how to play the card catalog game is probably the most important piece of knowledge a college student will absorb during the course of his or her college career. The card catalog is an index to all books, audio-visumaterials, and government documents in the library collection. Access to government documents is also provided through the Index to U.S. Government Periodicals in the reference room. In addition to being included in the main card catalog, materials in special collections and the instructional media center are also indexed in their own card catalogs in each area. The main card catalog is divided into two pairs, the Author-Ti- tle Section and the Subject section. Moreover, information obtained through magazines in the serials room can be located by using the periodical indexes. After locating the card which describes the book you want, d corner. copy the entire number system in the upper This is the Call Number, which shows the location of the book in the Library. Dealing with the card catalog can be a real nightmare for some, however there is no more need to worry. If the situation turns gloomy and you begin to feel a little dazed and confused after hours of unsuccessful research, you can always resort to asking the librarian at the circulation desk for help. When it comes time to return the materials, they should be returned to the same place they were borrowed the circulation desk or the instructional media center. Overdue fines should be paid promptly. Even if materials are returned eventually, failure to pay fines will result in registration and grade holds. When the Library is closed, you can put borrowed materials in the book depository located on the wall south of the main door. individuals. Christensen recounted one of those success stories. "Today the State Bank of Southern Utah called and said can you tell us how to say welcome in Russian. Well, we just happen to have some RussianEngiish dictionaries and we were able to find the spelling for them. That was fun," he said. Christensen said that SUSC should start planning for a new Library for the long range good of the institution. "We need to get the best possible building and adequate staffing in order serve the students and help those students who don't have access to learning materials," he said. "I would like to see SUSC build a spacious, inviting building. think our Library has served would like very well for its design. However, to see some attractive colors and open space for study and attractive shelving. would like for our Library to be a place where people can come in and find what they need," he said. "I hate to see the Library criticized because my heart and soul are here. And yet, at the same time, see that we do need improvement," he said.
