He hopes to see Sherratt: 'A quality Library will maintain our excellence' A. ysident Gerald R. virtually all of them will have graduated when a new facility becomes a reality. That's highly indicative of the quality of our students." Sherratt says that in order to continue and improve on SUSC's "phenomenal" academic achievements, students must have a comparable Library. "We have an outstanding student body," he says, reciting what he calls "the litany of student Sherratt is certainly no shrinking violet when it comes to those in favor of a new Library here. He terms it "the priority need of the college," and is at the forefront of those who seek an improvement of services to students. "It is the college's goal to create one of the finest libraries of any small college in the country. To do this we will need to seek funding through state and private means," he says. Sherratt points to the high academic caliber of SUSC's student body and maintains that in order to continue to shine, students must have access to topflight reference materials and have a stellar space in which to study. "It's extremely important to note," he says, "that our student leaders have also branded this a item, especially when you consider that top-priori- ty achievements": "Over the last years," he says, "every SUSC graduating senior who has applied to dental school has been accepted. Over the past 10 years, 80 percent of our law school applicants have been accepted. In the past six years, 73 percent of SUSC graduates who have applied to veterinary medicine school have been accepted, compared to a national average of 47 percent." Sherratt proudly lists other achievements such as the six forensic squad's second place finish in the country last month and Phi Beta Lambda's sweep of state business competition last week. "On top of this is the strong student commitment not only to individual success but the success of the college as well, by sacrificing for future classes. It's truly something to be proud of," he said. "The simple fact is that our students know full well our need for a new Library already, not to mention how badly we will need one in the next few years," he said "A new survey has shown that interest in Utah colleges and universities among high school seniors rose overwhelmingly in favor of SUSC this year. The increase in interest in SUSC was more than that in all other schools combined. That indicates that our Library situation will become even more dire in the future as enrollment continues to climb " Randy Christensen serves the public, but it's not easy here r Ajsc officials made the right decision when they chose Randy Christensen to serve as the SUSC Public Service Librarian. "I'm a service oriented person. That's how feel useful in life," he says It's difficult to be service oriented though when the Library is lacking in so many areas. However, Christensen does the best job that he can with what little resources he has. Some of his job duties include programming and running the library computers, teaching library oriented classes, processing and giving out documents, and most important of all answering any reference questions. Christensen would be an ideal contestant for Jeopardy because of the knowledge he has gained from answering so many reference questions. "What enjoy more than anything about my job is answering reference questions. consider that to be my prime responsibility. One of my first priorities is to help people find information," he said. Christensen said that sometimes he gets frustrated because I I I (CONTINUED ON PACE 7) ancy Christensen says he often is frustrated because adequate resources are not available here. |
