Show The SummerbircLPage 3 Summer School offerings are many and varied Classes begin today for the first of two summer school sessions at Utah's only four-yestate college south of Salt Lake City. Many programs to serve a wide range of needs are available this summer at SUSC. Regular undergraduate courses will be offered in 33 different major areas of study and 15 courses are available for those persons pursuing a master's degree in the School of Education. A one week course on Computer Assisted Drafting, using the Apple system, will also begin today as a class. One in the Computer Science department called WorkshopAppleworks begins June 30. classes will be available through Other the summer including an Introduction to Painting class at Lake Powell in August, six Industrial Arts and three Technical Education courses. Opportunities are also available for the younger set. For high school students, a football camp starts today and a basketball camp is scheduled July 6 to 11. Color Country Forensics Institute will be held July 6 to 18 for junior and senior high students. July 7 through August 16, courses for high school juniors and seniors will be held at Brian Head through the SUSC "Summer Mountain" program. This opportunity to get a head start oh college includes 19 total credit hours in these areas: geology, botany, physical science (astronomy), chemistry, and english. All of these credits fill general education requirements. The Institute for Gifted and Talented students will be offered again this summer at Brian Head. This SUSC Summer Mountain course will provide fourth through ninth graders a challenging academic activities in an experience and around-the-cloc- k alpine mountain setting. ar rt rt 586-771- rt 586-546- 586-785- 0. mid-da- y on Saturday the festivities halt for the Ceremony of the Massed Bands, a paean to the skirling of the pipes. Festival patrons are treated throughout the day to a variety of authentic Scottish foods, and booths filled with crafts, crests and jewelry. At College's Great Hall where Scottish attire is a prerequisite for entrance. The paneled walls of the Great Hall and the three giant stained-glas- s windows form an authentic backdrop to the presentation of awards for the music of the pipes, the footwork of the dancers, and the competitive prowess of the athletes. Ninteen hours of college credit can be obtained through the Brian Head summer concurrent program, D. Mark Barton, SUSC director of admisions and records, explains. "The Brian Head summer schooling is a unique experience. Our program directors say this could possibly be the best of all worlds of education. Once students experience this, they may never be satisfied with traditional education." Scholarships are available for the Summer Mountain program. Anyone interested can get further information by contacting the office of continuing education at SUSC and at most other colleges and universities, according to Carter. Students in the Summer Mountain program will k receive concentrated training during a period G u ly 16). Cost of the program is $1,250 and includes in addition to the 19 hours of college credit meals for 42 days; condominiums lodging for 41 nights; tickets to the Utah Shakespearean Festival; field trips to Cedar Breaks National Monument and to Bryce Canyon, Zion, and Grand Canyon national parks; a "Ranissance Feast;" and several steak fry and Dutch oven cookouts. To qualify for enrollment, a student must be in good standing, meeting the prescribed curriculum, and expecting to receive a high school diploma at the appropriate graduation time. A 2.5 (C plus) grade point average is required. 5. 11-1- The day concludes with spectacular banquet in the 586-546- te Highland Heritage Festival scheduled for July 2 The myth and majesty of Scotland comes vibrantly alive this summer at the second annual Gathering of the Clans on July 11 and 12 when the traditions of ancient Caledonia are revived in music, dance, sports and food. Under the sponsorship of SUSC, the Gathering of the Clans features a regal processional, led by the Lord Mayor, and boasting bagpipe bands and drum corps, interlaced with banners emblazoned with heraldry, costumed lords, ladies, and knights, and climaxes with the arrival of the monarch herself. At the processional's conclusion, the Scottish tournament continues, piper against piper, dancer against dancer, athlete against athlete. Administration Building, through June 23. Students wishing to participate in the Summer Mountain concurrent enrollment program may register until July 3 at the SUSC Division of Continuing Education in the Old Administration Building on campus. Information about the newly developed program is availabe by calling that office at (801) Back on campus many activities are scheduled this summer beginning today with an ice cream social from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Student Center. The movie Cocoon will be shown in the Student Center Wednesday night and a dinner and dance at Woods Ranch is scheduled for Friday. Beside the benefit of a low student-facult- y ratio, another drawing for summer school is that students pay the lower instate tuition rate, according to Phillip Carter, director of the Summer School. Registration is still open for first session but a $10 late fee will be charged beginning tomorrow (Tuesday, June 24). Phone registration is also available between 3 and 5 p.m. daily at Students planning to attend second summer session beginning July '21 are encouraged to register early for the best selection of classes. College level courses will be offered through the regular SUSC summer school program and through a special "Summer Mountain" program where classes are taught and students are housed at Brian Head ski and Summer Resort.
