Along with those sounds come a lot of laughter and music. Physical Education 169, Elementary Square Dance, is the official name for what is going on and is the reason for these sounds. The class is required for all physical education majors, and most seem to enjoy it a great deal. Square dancing is described in the Websters Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary as a group of four couples who form a hollow square, and the word square dancer originated in 1879. Although today square dancing is considered a folk dance, square dancing was at one time one of the most popular dances in America, giving pioneers a respite from the monotony of everyday life. Although today square dancing is considered a folk dance. It is performed by groups of four couples. The couples follow the direction of a caller who calls out different movements and Do-si-d- o patterns. Square dancing looks easy to most onlookers and for the most part it is, but it can be more of a challenge than it looks. Contrary to popular belief it right if you get stuck dancing with a member of the is all same sex. People come in thinking that square dancing is corny, but they really seem to be enjoying themselves, says instructor Terri Lauterbach. There are 86 students in the class. We seem to have a pretty good balanced number of men and women in the class. Lauterbach said. Many square dances come from ancient English, Irish, and Scottish folk dances that were brought to America by early settlers. Different styles of square dancing have been developed in the east and the west, which is basically what the class teaches. Spring quarter, a social dance class is being offered. The waltz, jitterbug, western swing, and other types of dances will be taught. Lauterbach will also teach this class, P.E. 172, Elementary Social Dance. It will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1C to 11 a.m. |
