They take turns producing, running cameras, directing the floor, watching the board and covering audio, he says. Godfrey says, Students need to know what theyre doing; its their responsibility to see that the shows run smoothly. ODriscoll says the station uses state of the art equipment. Cameras alone cost $20,000 to $25,000 each. Our equipment is compaiable to what KSL Channel 5 uses in Salt Lake, he says. But he says the field of telecommunications is constantly improving upon itself. We have two editing machines that take a tape. Already technicians have come up with a better one that takes a halfinch tape instead, he said. KGSU needs more funds in order to purchase and maintain quality equipment and to expand programming. Last year KGSU ran several programs including Southwest Journal , Sports Talk, and tapes of SUSCs Convocation series. This year well have to combine Southwest Journal with Sports Talk and have the news run somewhere between five to 10 minutes, ODriscoll says. He realizes that few people are aware of the stations existence. We have to let the students know the television station is out there, and let the community know so they can enjoy the programing and get involved with donations, he BY CYNDY LEYSON SUSCs television station KGSU, Channel nine, serves both the campus and the surrounding Cedar community. Located on the second level of the library, the studio is fully operated by students of the communication department. The mam purpose of the station is to provide student training and to give students an opportunity to gain experience in the world of communications, says Donald G. Godfrey, associate professor of the communication department. Work with the television station is open to any student who is interested and currently enrolled in a communications class. Were looking for qualified leadership, says Godfrey. Dean ODriscoll is the new manager of KGSU. He is also a 1983 SUSC graduate with a major in communications. After spending the past eight months in St. working for KDL-TGeorge, he says this years have to programs will basicall start from scratch. The station has been running for only two quarters, and with the appointment of a new manager and a comparatively smaller staff, this years programming may take some cutbacks, station officials say. Were limited by students and time, ODriscoll says. A lot of people dont understand how much time it takes to produce a show. A program may last half an hour on the air, but preparation for the show calls for additional time to get all of the students together in one taping session. There are currently 10 says.
