The college last month accepted bids from units on contractors to build the single-studethe Thorley property located south of SUSCs stadium. Earlier housing plans called for 50 apartments for married students and 40 units for single students, but Michael D. Richards, vice president for college relations, said married students might be handled by existing apartments in town. We have decided to divorce ourselves from the married student units for now. Theyre very difficult, given the current economy, Richards said. Were looking at other alternatives. Added Vice President for Student Services Sterling Church, There is just a 'more critical need for single student housing. The big increases in student enrollment will be in freshmen who are single. The housing study, supervised by Church, recommended that SUSCs Building Construction Program build housing for married students on the Thorley site beginning Fall, 1986. That will give our building construction e work experience, and we would program save on labor costs as well, noted Church. and four-ple- x Church said that several two-ple- x on-sit- condominiums have been built in Cedar City, and young professional couples are moving into them. As these young couples move into the condominiums, it frees up student apartments, he added. And despite ongoing plans to tear down Oak Hall, Church said the married student dormitory will be around for the foreseeable future probably a minimum of five years. The college also hopes to renovate the Manzanita and Juniper dormitories and may add two additional wings to Manzanita. According to the study, if the college is held up in its plans for single and married student housing on the Thorley site, it may be able to bring down housing from the Intermountain Power Plant site at Delta, Utah, for 1986-8If we really get into a crunch, those IPP units would be available, Church said, noting that even local apartments like the Lunt Hotel could be used, although those are units that werent really designed for prolonged student living.
