Show Harrison to present Convo lecture George Orwell and Humpty Dumpty: Can Language Be Trusted? will be presented by James W. Harrison at SUSCs 1984 Distinguished Faculty Lecture Dec. 6. The lecture, part of the colleges Convocation series, will start at 11 a.m. in the Auditorium. A reception in Harrisons honor will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Tanner Room. Harrison, associate professor of German, has served as chairman of the general literature section of the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters. He has presented several papers at academy meetings and for various National Endowment of Humanities' programs. Along with research work and teaching responsibilities, he serves on several college development boards and committees, including those for academic standards, faculty and library development, and humanities planning. Harrison said he believes that one of the most frightening visions of George Orwells 1984 is Newspeak, the language of Orwells fictitious country Oceana. In Orwell's book, Oceana has succeeded in developing a mutant language which frustrates the very purpose of the language communication. The lecture will cover Harrisons feeling and beliefs on that subject. Harrison joined the SUSC faculty in 1976. He earned bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. Price outlines council salary changes by Annette Grooms Price and Student ASSUSC President have completed Brad.Bennett Director Activities Sc-ot- t Executive Council evaluations and expect no members changes in personnel winter quarter, but did agree to a policy change regarding salaries. We evaluate strictly on performance, said Price. The three areas of performance are meetings, committee work, and leadership development. He also outlined a policy to raise or lower salaries based on performance of the council members. At present, the average pay is $70 each quarter. Price proposes to change the pay to an average of $75 for the Council and $45 for senators. The secretaries receive $66 and Price, Academics Vice President Steve Wright, and Social Vice President Bruce Hiskey all will receive $300 a quarter. Stipends should be awarded on the basis of merit, not simply the existence of a particular office, said Price. It does not work to give everyone the same amount. Book exchange opens December 10 book exchange is still SUSCs student-ru- n looking for students to help in operations, but that wont delay a Dec. 10 starting date. Students who bring books to the exchange, which will through Dec. 14, will be allowed to set their own prices. To cover operating expenses, the exchange will add a 5 percent surcharge. The exchange may also have to pay a 5.5 percent sales tax, according to accountants in the controllers office, despite being supported by student government. That possibility is still under investigation. Exchange organizers have considered several ways to use, surcharge profits, including sending donations to Ethiopia. Members of the Executive Council have also suggested the possibility of turning funds back You,ll find a Unique Gift for Everyone at that Special Place Where Love is Home Made. into the student budget. David Thayne, who originally proposed the exchange, said the operation will run from 4 p.m. in the Small Ballroom of the Student Center, except Dec. 10, when it will operate in the student lounge. The exchange is also planned to run winter quarter from Jan. If its successful, well do it again, Thayne said. If its not, then students have lost their right to complain about the bookstore prices. Students will list the prices at which they went to sell their books, but the exchange will return the book if it doesnt sell. But, said Thayne, we hope well sell it. The exchange will not be able to hold books not being used next quarter, he added. 2-- 3HTOT 579 SOUTH MAIN, CEDAR CITY 586-989- 6 PERSONAL PAN PIZZA AND ON TRIP TO THE ;4 df ' O C SALAD BAR FOR ONLY $2.79 EXPIRES DECEMBER 10, 1984 j TUESDAY NIGHT FROM 4 TO 9, YOU CAN SAVE AS MUCH AS $5. 00 WHEN YOU BUY ANY LARGE PIZZA & PITCHER OF DRINK FOR ONLY $9.95 (EAT IN, OR TAKE TAKE OUT) |
