Volleyball team starts again by Wendy Barraclough y Luck was not on the Lady side this past week. Were going back to the drawing board, said Southern Utah Coach Joy Peterson after her squad dropped four of five matches on the week, all on the road. Im not pleased with our performance. We did not play to our potential, and we basically lacked total intensity. 15-5 We lost and 5 Northern Arizona University because we were just standing instead of playing, Peterson said. NAU took advantage of our shorter blockers, and because of that, they got the ball over more, but we werent picking up the balls as well as we have. The third game was tied four times, but the Lady 'Birds lost their mental composure, according to Peterson. We had ten service errors in all four games combined, and our reception of serves wasnt very good. Were fighting ourselves, we just werent playing with the flow of the game, said freshman DeeDee Magnuson. We should have better mental preparation, we just let other things get in our minds. Peterson said she feels the defense isnt quite up to specifications. We have to get thinking and performing positively, so we work on quick drills, passes, and blocking, she said. Offensively, our speed and anticipation is not where 1 want it. The Lady Birds faced tough competition during the weekend, meeting Mesa College, Regis College and Western State. The game against Regis on Friday was really close and we played really well, even though we lost, Peterson said. DeeDee ' Magnuson, Tori Brinkerhof, Mary Cox and Michelle Adams played really tough and really helped the team in the match. The Thunderbirds were defeated earlier that day by Mesa by scores of We played five hours straight, from 5 to 10 p.m. said Peterson. We do have a goal to beat Mesa and take them out of their ranking. Right now, they are ranked 12th in the nation and I believe that we can do it. We have beat them before, and theyre good competition for us. Just because youve beaten someone doesnt mean youll do it again. The met Regis again Saturday, losing in four games, but and 15-not before beating Western State, 15-11-1- 14-1- 16-1- |
