Phar Lap, a triumphant movie about a gifted horse and the people who believed in him, is based on a true story that took place in Sydney, Australia in the 1930s. Tom Burlinson, recently seen in Man From Snowy River, plays the part of a stable boy who makes the horse his friend, and a national racehorse champion. Phar Laps owner, Dave Davis (Ron Leibman), with dollar signs and fame in his eyes, regards the d horse as a in the beginning and puts him in the care of Harry Telford (Martin Vaughan). Telford, at the expense of his family, friends and career, sets out to train Phar Lap to be a winner. The film, as it remained throughout, was packed with highly emotional moments, humorous situations, and effective suspense. Even I got the chills when the horse won his first race. Phar Lap was not lacking opposition and conflict either, which gives body to any story. Tommy Woodcock, the stable boy, along with last. But last it does, to the very end, leaving some people rich and the rest in awe of the beautiful, spirited thoroughbred. Tricky photography and beautiful musical ballads add much to the emotional impact of the film. All of the characters remain constant throughout, at times falling to greed and pressure, but never leaving a question as to their role in the story. I would like to be able to surface flaws in this picture, but there are few, and I would be at fault not to have been touched by it. Being a journalist, however, I am particularly offended when the press is depicted as a heartless, dirtgathering crowd of beasts. But that image is painted often in movies of that era, and I am getting used to it. Phar Lap is, without question, one of this years best pictures, one of the few PG movies that is suitable for people of all ages. If you let it, Phar Lap will leave you a different person than when you walked into the theatre. The ficticious community, in which dwelt the comic stip character Lil Abner, set one day aside yearly for each girl of the town to race around town in hot pursuit of a husband. The man she caught was the man she married. In lieu of that holiday, The Associated Women Students presents its annual Sadie Hawkins Dance Friday, Oct. 12 in the Great Hall. The theme this year is Ronnie Milsaps I wouldnt have missed it for the world, which will be sung by Dale Davis at 10:30 p.m. The band Crossfire will provide the music throughout the evening. Sadie Hawkns will be an exciting dance, Dance Coordinator Darnae Mason said, Its a good chance for girls to ask guys out. After the Sadie Hawkins race in Dogpatch time, the girl and her newly acquired fiance leaped over a broom and were pronounced husband and wife. Among the activities scheduled for the dance is a marriage booth, in which the girl and her date may participate in a mock marriage ceremony. Old fashioned hick decorations will be furnished by the Iron County Mission Museum, Mason said. Among the furnishings will be hay, wagon wheels, washboards, tubs, and a phonograph. Casual or western wear will be the attire for the evening. Students can obtain photographs of themselves and their dates to remember the evening. Refreshments will be served. The cost of admission will be $1 for girls, and, however offensive it may be to some, a penny per pound for the guys. is featuring Saturday Night Dance $50 drawing at 9 p.m. Skating till 9 p.m. ' STANLEY UNBREAKABLE STEEL THERMOS with POUR-THRSPOUT Our rpq 9:30-Midnig- ht Ladies Night Wednesday Admission $1 Ladies $2 Guys Open Saturday Open Monday-Thursda- i. 7-1- y r S26 97 0 31 I i "1 t - - 1 Tiijr' b f -- r-- y .XFy, h j ?v 4 i; . 3 M f ,' ' s- :AS? if ii thru cecsTiPxnM 3 1st. 7-1- 1 |
