Z ion Zion offers escape from homework by Sheila Sue Hansen Now that school has started it probably wont be long until you have that run down feeling. Students at SUSC are fortunate, theres a nearby place to take off, soar and relax. Deep within the serenity of nearby Zion National Park students can escape the college blues. Leaving Cedar City the first part of Zion is only 25 minutes away, the Kolob Canyons area. A newly opened Kolobs Canyons visitors center welcomes hikers, campers or people just out to see the beauty in nature. Kolob features finger like mountains that jut into sky, displaying colorful varieties of rock. First time viewers stand in awe at the beauty of Kolob. In 1968 a scenic 5.5 mile drive was built that twists and turns beneath the mountains. There are many interesting trails and beautiful backcountry areas for day use or backpacking for extended stays or exploration. Most of the backcountry areas require a permit which can be obtained at the visitors center. Some of the trails and interest sites are: Kolob Arch; which is the largest arch in the world with a 310 foot span. Middle Fork Taylor Creek;, one of the most beautiful trails with tall pines, alcoves and caves. You will also find several old cabins, three of which were used by homesteaders in the 1930s. Some of the other points of interest are: South Fork Taylors creek, with a natural dam at the end of a narrow canyon. Horse ranch mountain, Lee pass, which is a three day trip if you take it at a leisurely pace. Bear Trap Canyon, a Petrified Forest, Congratulations to Scott Robins, the male athlete of the week. Scott, a senior linebacker from Scipio, Utah, had 12 unassisted tackles for the Thunderbirds against Mesa. Good job Scott. FARM STATE and Camp Creek. For more i iformation contact Ken Kerr or one of the other rangers who work at the visitors center. We want students here, said Kerr. The rangers would like to remind students though that there are no pets on the trails and no firearms in the park. This weeks movies at the Cedar Ci Another hours drive takes you to the massive main canyon of Zion National Park. A good place to start a tour of Zion is the visitors center. There are many interesting things to see and learn there. There is also a view of the natural bridge on Bridge Mountain. The road in Zion is red, made from volcanic cinders and takes you to the next place, the Court of the Patriarchs which was named by a priest and his son. As you travel down the road there are many popular places for a picnic or a day hike.
