Show Page 10 The Tfumderbird Monday, May 14, 1984 PBL again excels in statewide competition For the third time in four years an SUSC student has been selected to represent Utah at the National Phi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference as the winner of statewide Mr. Future Business Executive competition. Theron N. Jensen, a senior business administration major from Mesquite, Nev., won first place honors at the state PBL contest held recently at Utah Technical College, Orem. SUSC students Rodney Perry and Gerald Bybee represented Utah at the PBL nationals in Mr. Future Business Executive competition in 1983 and 1981, respectively. Another of SUSCs seven first place state awards went to Jessica J. Barton, a senior business administration major from Las Vegas, Nev., who won Ms. Future Business Executive competition. Barton, Nevadas 1983 Truman Scholar, also placed first in Impromptu Speaking. Both Barton and Jensen received $250 cash awards from Bonneville Corporation as Future Business Executive winners. The other first place winners received $50 cash awards from American Express, according to Doris Williamson, adviser to SUSCs Phi Chi Alpha Chapter of PBL. We took 19 students to the state contests and 16 of them placed with honorable mentions or above, Williamson said, adding that SUSC finished competition with 31 awards. The National Phi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference will be held July 5 through 8 in Atlanta, Ga. "We're confident that well do well at the nationals, Williamson said. Weve had two national winners Phillip Lee and Cal Huber in Mr. Future Business Teacher and Rod Perry and Gerald Bybee finished second and third respectively, in Mr. Future Business Executive contests. Chi Alphas delegation to Atlanta will include Jeffrey D. Maxwell, a senior accounting major from Cedar City, who is the national PBL Treasurer. Maxwell was a first place winner in Accounting II competition but wont compete because of his national PBL office. He finished second in Mr. Future Business Executive competition. SUSC had six students entered in Future Business Executive competition, and all six placed in the finals, said Bruce Hiskey, Chi Alpha publicity coordinator. Paul Hatch, a senior business administration major Theron Jensen is the third SUSC student in four years to represent Utah for the national Future Business Executive title. . from Cedar City, finished first in business law. Allan Buethe, a senior business education major from Magna, finished first in Word ProcessingMachine Transcription and fourth in Administrative AssistantTypist. Another first place winner was Jon Christy, another senior majoring in business administration from Cedar City, who topped statewide competition in marketing. Christy received an honorable mention in Business Decision Making with fellow students Bruce Hiskey and Thayne Houston. Theron Jensen also finished state competition with a fourth place in Management and an honorable mention in Economics. Jensen, Barton and Scott Johnson took fifth place in Business Decision Making. Second place awards went to SUSC senior Conrad Naegle, Cornish, Cache County, in both Business Law and Management. The business administration major finished third in Mr. Future Business Executive competition. Chi Alpha Chapter also received a second place award in Volleyball. Additional third place awards went to Scott Johnson, a senior accounting major from Marysvale, in Accounting II; to Panguitch freshman Lana Houston in Job Interview; and to Jolyn Morgan Feller, a senior business business education major from Circleville, In Ms. Future Business Teacher. Johnson was cited for superior involvement in PBL activities in Who's Who in PBL. He also received fourth in Mr. Future Business Executive and fifth with Barton and Jensen in Business Decision Making. Another third place went to the Chi Alpha Chapter in Largest Local Chapter competition. The chapter received further recognition for its Businessperson of the Year activities, the award presented this year to Cedar City businessman Eldon Schmutz. Fourth place awards, in addition to those mentioned above, include those to Ken Harvey, a junior business administration major from West Jordan, in Business Communications, and to Tanya Campbell, a senior secretarial major from Spanish Fork, in Word ProcessingMachine Transcription. Campbell also received an honorable mention in Administrative AssistantTypist competition. Senior business administration major Nanette DeFiesta, Kaneohe, Hawaii, placed fifth in Marketing.
