Judges will base 45 percent of total score on academic while other attributions 4 during the academic year will be included in final decision. All R. Kenneth Benson and Sterling Silver nominees must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher and at least 120 credit hours to qualify. Nominees for the R. Kenneth Bensen Award include Paul Hatch, Cedar City; Neil Hirschi, Las Vegas, Nev.; Theron Jensen, Mesquite, Nev.; Scott Johnson, Marysvale, Utah; Jeff Maxwell, Cedar City; and John Waters, Richfield. Nominees for the Sterling Silver Award are Jessica Barton, Las Vegas, Nev.; Tammy Jones Banks, Cedar City; Maria Josefina Navarrete, Irapuato, Mexico; and Stacey Smith, Sunset, Utah. Female Contributor of the Year award nominees include Shelly Gray, St. George, Utah; Staci Bird, 83-8- These may soon be familiar words because on the Thunderbird Awards night of May 22 an Oscars-style- d will held be Auditorium. in SUSC the ceremony The Awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m. and y promises to be an evening of entertainment and recognitions, indicates Chairman Chad Hulet. Entertainment will include the Burch Mann Dance Ensemble, Lorraine Thompson, Opus II, and the SUSC Jazz Band. Lynette Jolley, Snow Queen 1984, will be singing, Finale. According to Hulet, the entertainment will be excellent and an example of our talent here on campus. The Entertainer of the Year nominees will be the opening act of the night. Larry Wilcox, who portrayed Jon Baker on the television series CHiPs, will serve as the master of ceremonies. The previously-schedule- d master of ceremonies, Grant Goodeve, most recognized in his parts in Eight is Enough and Dynasty had signed a contract to host the television program Solid Gold. Wilcox has taken over responsibilities as guest host, says Hulet. He will be assisted by SUSC students Stuart Jones, Don Hulet, Suzanne Anderson and Barbara Smith. More than a dozen awards will be presented including the Alumnus of the Year Award and Thunderbird Special Recognition Awards which are being presented for the first time this year. The awards presentations include the Male and Female Athlete of the Year, Personality of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, Scholar of the Year, Male and Female Contributor of the Year, the R. Kenneth Benson Award and the Sterling Silver Award. The R. Kenneth Benson Award, which is presented to a male, and the Sterling Silver Award, for a female, are the most prestigious. The male award is named for Ken Benson, the retired director of student services. Nominees for the Male and Female Contributors of the Year are students who have offered many of their services to the college and bettered it some way. The Male and Female Athlete of the Year are the persons who best epitomize their sport and have contributed to the college in that area. Finalists of the Male Athlete of the Year award are Gary Mason, Salt Lake City; Shawn Daniels, San Francisco; Dave Webb, Cedar City; Doug Templeton, Stuart Adams, Parowan; and William James, who is now in Calgary, Canada for football camp. Female Athlete of the Year nominees are Gwen Thomas, Helper; Colleen Hawkins, Provo; Brenda Shaw, Salt Lake City; and Jennifer Smith from Victoria, Canada. Nominees for the Scholar of the Year award are Brent Dix and David Dix both of Cedar City; Theron Jensen, Mesquite, Nevada; Conrad Naegle, Cornish; Kim Weber, and Marcia D.G. Goncalves. Finalists for Entertainer of the Year are students who have used their talents for the purpose of entertaining others. Finalists are Lori Morrell, Cedar City; Mike Michie, Cedar City; Natalie Frehner, Cedar City; Paul Gates, Salt Lake City; Tad Brinkerhoff, Cedar City; and Brooks Washburn, Mapleton. Personality of the Year candidates are Jilynn Nielsen, Cedar City; Brooks Washburn, Mapleton; Mark Wade, St. George; Dave Burr, Santa Clara; Scott Price, Cedar City; and Scott Johnson, Maryvale, Utah. The nominees went through a very selective process. First, the students were chosen according to the categories by the student body. A group vote determined the finalists, who are then subjected to an interview process consisting of a panel of nine judges. The finalists were also required to submit a resume including all of their achievements and projects during the year. The Organization of the Year Award will also be given to a campus club which has earned the honor through service and achievement. The student body has also selected nominees for the Presidents Award, which will be presented to a faculty or staff member who has made significant impact. Presidents Award finalists are Mark Barton, SUSC director of admissions; Rodney Batt, Student Center custodian; Sandy Gillies, college media specialist; Dale Hatch, assistant professor of business; and Doris Williamson, associate professor of business. The awards ceremony is free to the public, says Hulet, with everyone invited to attend the event.
