Show New avenue for allergy sufferers Food allergy sufferers may soon be finding new relief if discoveries by Robert W. Gardner prove true. After 10 years of research trying to find solutions to his own allergy problems, which he said often left him nauseous, disoriented, with a high pulse, and diarrhea, Gardner began to recognize connections between different plants chemical compositions. Eventually Gardner came to the hypothesis that these allergies are caused by compounds with aromatic chemical structures. He explained that aromatic compounds are the chemicals in plants which give the color and flavor of the plant and help preserve it. It is believed that most food allergies are caused The conventional allergists in Provo are trying to discount everything Yve done. by a sensitivity to protiens, however Gardners work proves differently. Aromatic compounds are found throughout most plants, but Gardner said they are also found in milk and meats as the result of the feeds the animals consume. Gardners interest in food allergies resulted because of his problems with foods. Gardner had total food allergies all foods caused adverse reactions in his body. Although he visited numerous doctors who suggested anything from taking two aspirin and going to bed to seeing a psychologist to solve his problem, he related that their advice brought no relief or improvement. Through his studies and research Gardner also learned that aromatic compounds cause an intensified response of adrenaline, increased potassium in the blood cells and alterations in blood circulation. The increase in adrenaline he said is probably one of the reasons some children are hyperactive. Depression, he added, is also related to the chemicals effect on adrenaline production. Adrenaline production is produced until it is eventually depleted leaving the individual in a state of depression. Other problems which Gardner said may be the result of allergic reactions are ringing in the ears, dizziness, gas, tiredness and headaches in addition to hyperactivity and depression. Gardner learned to recognize when he was having an allergic reaction by monitering his pulse rate. Gardner studied over 154 foods. He has found seven chemicals which he has used to desensitize himself to the aroma compounds in foods and so far there has been no regression. Currently, with the help of a medical physician in Provo, testing is taking place to see if these chemicals have the same aiding effect on others as they have had on Gardner. Gardner said in about six months the results of the tests should provide more information. Gardner, professor of animal science at Brigham Young University, was a guest speaker on campus and was hosted by the Agriculture Club. He is a native of St. George where he was raised on a sheep ranch. Gardner earned his bachlors degree in nutrition at Utah State University and his doctorate at Cornell University. He is trained in both human and animal nutrition. He also is an honorary member of the Nuro-allerg- y Committee of the American College of Allergies. Although Gardners findings could prove to be a major breakthrough for allergy sufferers not everyone is excited with Gardners work. The conventional allergists in Provo are trying to discount everything Ive done, he said, they havent even looked at it.. .but, you see those people when they are challenged with those chemicals and the reactions that they get, you soon learn that there is something to it.
