SUSC basketball motors idled in neutral for more than a week before facing the Indians. The opening tip off was all they needed to kick into gear. Behind solid, scoring the Thunderbirds roared off to a 20 point lead before retiring for the half. The Birds didnt quite maintain their breakneck speed in the second half, however. The Indians staged a comeback in the trailing minutes of the game to pull within six points at the 1:32 mark. Gymnasts finish third Conference meet sees Thunderbirds top team average Southern Utah gymnasts captured honors for third place Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships held in the War Memorial Fieldhouse. Thunderbird gymnasts increased their team average by 3 points with a final team score of 124.70 in the meet that was won by the University of Southern Colorado. USC is really tough, SUSC gymnastic coach Kathryn Berg said after the meet. They have a strong high school program in their area and are highly skilled gymnasts. SUSC literally catapulted their way into the rankings after a strong showing in the vault. We did a good job on vault, gymnastic coach Kathryn Berg said. Vaulters for the did exceptionally well with their lowest score in the event being an 8.2, a fairly high score. Berg was well pleased with her teams placing in every event, citing the gymnasts hard efforts in preparation for the championships. Berg praised the efforts of senior gymnast Brenda Shaw who captured fourth place in the gymnastic competition. It was her last collegiate meet and I was really proud of her, Berg said. Berg was also pleased with the gymnasts performance on the uneven bars. Bars have been one of our rough spots all year long, Berg commented. The Thunderbird scoring in the event though was eclipsed by performance in the balance beam. The balance beam the toughest routine in gymnastics and has annoyed the team all year. Saturday was no exception as all but one of Thunderbird gymnasts fell during their routine. Everytime you fall you lose a half a is point, Berg commented. Beam has been our nemesis all year. In addition to Shaw, members of this years team include, Terri Judd, Karen Smith, Terri Sodja, Jennifer Walke, Yolanda Montoya, Nancy Barr and Michelle Goodwin. Were a young team, Berg said. Next year she expects the team to do even better with more mature performances. The learn is now pi paring for nationals which will be held March 9 and 10 in Georgia.
