When it is kept out of reach of the people, in museums and white towers, that is when it dies. Burch Mann, founder of the American Folk Ballet, presented SUSC students with a new look at modern art in last weeks convocation lecture. Her theme was The Irresponsible Artist, in which she described what she felt art should be, and the possibilities of its extinction. Art is doing things well, Mann said, and to do anything well requires caring enough to put in extra effort. She stated that many of todays young artist fail to meet the needs of humanity through their displays of complicated and selfish is Levi yfc Wrangler JOLLEYS MCHWEAR 52 North Main blunders. 586-810- 8 Mann believes that the true artist is a lover of things great and small, and has to be totally m love with humanity. Some art today would be a joke if it werent so tragic, she said, because we are buying it. Mann doesnt consider herself a traditionalist, however. She described herself as being a radical, always looking for something new and beautiful. That was her goal in developing the American Folk Ballet. I was looking for something that displayed American culture, rather than the traditional European style, Mann said. My dancers are classical trained, though, and I get my ideas from traditional dance. Mann feels that the biggest problem with an artist today is the philosophy that he is not his brothers keeper, that his main objective is to himself, not to the good of mankind. Art should be a product of work done with love, she said. Mann studied classical Ballet in New York after high school. She received the Dance Master of America Award, and the Dance in Action award with professionals Cyd Charise and Donald OConnor. Being a professional choreographer requires a great deal of study, said Mann, and she doesnt even have a degree. If that were required I wouldnt be teaching at all, she said. SUSC is the headquarters for the American Folk Ballet, and is said to produce the most ftutstandir.g dancers in the world. Mann said when she choreographs a piece, she wants it to be a record of our people. I try to write something that wont be stylish just today or tomorrow, she said. Its a record, o historical piece. Mann believes that success in art comes with the use of restrictions. Artists must exercise strict discipline, she explained. Musicians must stay into the limits of music, painters must stay in the limit of the canvas and brush. When we throw out restrictions, we are giving up anything that is worthwhile. ouu OL to r Bring in your Video America membership and Exchange it for a Sounds Easy membership Thru March only Rent a Machine j and a movie for $500 and get a second invie ( I FREE I .Expires Feb. 27 thru March 1 1 570 South Main Cedar City, Utah 5867120 (In SOUNDS EASY the Albertsons Shopr ng Center) |
