In its monthly meeting, the SUSC Institutional Council unanimously approved a proposal Friday from Vice President Terry D. Alger to label funds received to help finance doctorate studies as faculty fellowships rather than sabbaticals. Alger said that the IRS will defer taxes on these funds if the monies are applied toward achieving a specific purpose and are not just a standard grant available to anyone. The term faculty fellowship implies a specific purpose, while sabbatical does not. Assistant Professor of Business Glen Barker discovered these specifications when he applied for a sabbatical allowance, said Alger. Eligibility for the fellowships will be determined by tenure and educational goals.(Faculty fellowships) will be restricted " 100 percent for those returning to continue their education. Any other purpose will be labeled as a sabbatical, said Alger. In other council business, President Gerrald R. Sherratt accounting courses reported that SUSC will submit to the Board of Regents for approval. The requests were designed to comply with the fifth educational year required for accounting majors to graduate. Sherratt also noted that plans for the SUSC Centrum were completed and bids for the project are now being accepted. The groundbreaking ceremonies are scheduled for March 10, the day of the Founders Day Banquet. Chairman Dale Zabriskie appointed a council to look for candidates for the honorary degrees and Distinguished Service Award that will be awarded during the graduation ceremonies in June. The council also approved the passage of the ASSUSC Constitution revisions that were ratified by the student body last Monday. Title changes for four top administrators were presented to the council. Dr. Terry D. Alger, academic vice president, was given the title of Provost. Paul R. Southwick, financial vice president, was named executive vice president for financial affairs; Dr. Michael D. Richards, assistant to the president was made vice president for college relations; and Dr. Sterling R.
