Show The Tfumderbird Monday, January 30, 1984 Lady Birds split two road games by Orin Allen The SUSC womens basketball team won a crucial game Thursday, beating the Western New but dropped a Saturday Mexico Mustangs 68-6night contest 2 to the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls to even their conference mark at The Lady Birds accomplished their win and suffered their loss without the help of starting center Paula Burgoyne, who is out of action for an indefinite period of time. Burgoyne suffered a back injury in last weeks loss to Adams State. We had to go back to the basics. When we lost Paula we lost one of our best defensive players but most of all we lost a lot of experience, said Coach Boyd Adams. We have several injuries and we have to do the best we can with what we have. They led us by quite a bit earlier in the game but we regrouped and came back to win, said Adams of the win over Western New Mexico. 3, 73-6- 5-- 5. Gwen Thomas led the scoring for SUSC by pouring in 19 points. Saturday nights contest was a hard fought battle that simply lasted too long for SUSC. With eight minutes remaining in the game the Lady Birds had a six point advantage, but with five minutes on the clock their lead had been cut to two points. The ball just wouldnt drop because we were so fatigued, Adams said. The difference in the game was Highlands big girls dominating inside play late in the game. The Lady shot 51 percent in the first half but in the second half they cooled to 39 percent. It will be good to get home and play some games on our home court, said Adams. Im really proud of the girls, I felt we played well but we just ran out of gas. The Lady Birds are now 6 overall, and 5 in RMAC standings. They travel to Mesa and Western State February 4 and 6 . 9-- 5-- Cagers fall twice in New Mexico (continued from page 1 0) saw Highlands hit free throws enough for a 10 point lead, but the Thunderbirds provided some theatrics of their own before bowing out. with a minute to play Southern Utah At heightened the intensity and scared the Cowboys with some valiant efforts. The irrepressible Shawn Daniels canned 24 points for the outing and teammates Maz Trakh and Eddie Benson added 15 and respectively. The Thunderbird loss was the first on the 83-7- 3 1 1 Highlands floor in 10 years. We did a pretty good job using the clock, Schermerhorn said in reference to the final minute. So much of it had to do with our defense, he continued. The Thunderbirds will have to patch up defensive holes tonight as they take on an excellent Grand Canyon College team. The Antelopes are a perennial NAIA force in basketball, employing highly talented players. Were going to break things up, Schermerhorn indicated of tonights game. Were going to use people from the bench. 84 Intramural action picking up by Ed Davis The intramurals program at SUSC has grown every year and this year looks to be no exception.
