Anderson, who spoke as the Convocation guest last week, was a Republican member of congress from Illinois from 1960 until he resigned in 1980 to pursue the Republican nomination for president. When he could not secure a nomination, Anderson ran for the presidency as an independent candidate. Anderson asks, Could our founding fathers function now in our system? When Martin Van Buren wrote The Origins of Inquiry into Parties, he expressed the view that the party should be based on three fundamental purposes, says Anderson. The partys first purpose is to rise above fractionalism and represent the whole and not the diverse parts of the party.
