Show The Thunderbird Monday, January 16, 1984 Lady Birds humble Western State Southern Utah States womens basketball squad improved its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record to 2 with a resounding 66-4- 6 victory over Western State Thursday evening. The Thunderbird women will be idle until Jan. 20 and 21, when they travel to Colorado to meet Adams State and Fort Lewis. d The contest was punctuated by 50 turnovers, 37 fouls and two technical fouls, and Lady Bird Coach Boyd Adams said his team could have played better. Obviously it was not one of our better performances, Adams said. We made too many mistakes and if we had played a better team, it may have been more difficult for us to win. Western State jumped out to a 0 lead on a pair of Renee Foote jump shots. For the next six minutes, however, the SUSC defense toughened, and the Mounties did not score. The Lady Birds pulled even when Gwen Thomas scored on two jumpers, and SUSC took 4-- error-riddle- 4-- the lead for good after Amy Wright stole the ball on a press and hit a baseline jumper. SUSCs defensive pressure did not cease in the first half, forcing a total of 15 Western State turnovers. Outside shooting made the difference for SUSC at the offensive end of the floor. The Lady Birds hit a blistering 44 percent of their shots from the field in the opening block, and Wright and Thomas combined for 16 points eight each to 1 lead at intermission. give SUSC a Fast breaks created by Mountie turnovers yielded several layups in the second half, as SUSC continued to apply the press. The hapless Mounties could not keep up with the quickness of Lady Bird defenders, and SUSC coasted to an easy win. Thomas led all scorers with 19 points. Wright finished with eight, while Laurie Garrett scored seven and Denise Muir had six. Garrett ably manned the boards with 10 rebounds. above.
