Show The Thunderbird Monday, January 1G, 1984 Page 5 SUSC forensic teams win another tourney Strength in individual events has accounted for SUSCs latest forensic win, that of sweepstakes at the Alan Nichols National Invitational hosted by the University of Southern California. The USC tournament was the first of three contests entered by SUSC students in an early-yea- r swing through Southern California. Sweepstakes werent awarded at either Fullerton or UCLA. M.L. Smith, director of the SUSC forensic program, predicted a sweepstakes win at USC. We finished first out of a field of 61 colleges and universities, and we finished way ahead of the competition. Consistency in all areas of forensics NDT and CEDA debate and in individual events accounts for SUSCs success this year. Smith admits that the squad efforts are geared to the nationals this spring and before that, to the University of Utahs Greater Salt Lake Tournament. Well go en masse to GSL, all 50 of us, Smith said, noting that the entire squad has yet to compete in the same contest. Usually only a portion of the squad travels to a particular tournament. Only 21 students, for example, competed in Colorado to bring home sweepstakes from the Air Force Academy. SUSC has won sweepstakes at GSL for three consecutive years. Last year Smith received the tournaments Distinguished Coaching Award. Seven individual events specialists led the way to SUSCs USC sweepstakes. First place awards went to Kristen Catheral, a junior from American Fork, in poetry; to Theresa Schriver, a senior from New Castle, in expository speaking; and to Randy Hickman, a junior from Payson, in dramatic SOUNDS EASY NEW YEAR SPECIAL 75 OFF REGULAR MEMBERSHIP PRICE ONLY $500 PLUS ONE FREE MOVIE RENTAL FOR FIRST SO STUDENTS WITH COUPON Z NEW YEAR SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP ONLY $5 O Q. 3o o SOUNDS EASY PLUS ONE FREE MOVIE RENTAL EXPIRES JAN. 31, 1984 570 South Main (In 0 Cedar City, Utah the Albertsons Shopping Center) 586-712- AG K interpretation.
