The Broncos took advantage of their size and some accompanying quickness to dominate the boards and run an fast break that put the elusive, rapid-firvisitors on the defensive from the outset of the game. Pm concerned about some of the things we did or didnt do tonight, but thats what first games are for, to find out where you stand, said SUSC Coach Bob Schermerhorn. Schermerhorn said his Thunderbirds did a poor job of playing the physical y initiated early in type of game the contest. They pushed us around in there, and we didnt respond as well as we might have, Schermerhorn said. We need to be more aggressive. A bright spot for the Thunderbirds in the aggressiveness department was Todd Jeffs, Schermerhorn said. Jeffs, a 5 junior forward who transferred to SUSC from Snow College, tallied 25 points to lead all scorers. Each team enjoyed the lead at various intervals in the first half. After built a 10-- lead in the early going, the Thunderbirds reeled off 10 consecutive points to regain the advantage. Turnovers and missed shots hampered the SUSC attack, however, and the Thunderbirds could not capitalize on the lead they built with eight minutes gone in the half. The Broncos dominated their offensive boards and convened missed shots into easy layups to take an lead at the half. Officials whistled center John Pierce for three first-hafouls, adding to SUSCs woes. With Pierce on the bench, the Thunderbirds were forced to go with a small front line, Jeffs being the tallest . player. Meanwhile, Mark McCelvey wreaked havoc on SUSCs zone defense, scoring 14 points in the opening block to lead the Broncos. Under the guise of working a patient offense, the Broncos forced SUSC into turnovers, and initiated a fast break at every opportunity. SUSC was not without an attack of its own. Twice Eddie Benson found Shawn Daniels open in the first three minutes and assisted him to easy baskets. Meanwhile, Jeffs posted up inside and hit short jumpers at frequent intervals. The Thunderbird retaliation was not enough to slow down the charging Broncos, however. Before the second stanza was half over, had built a lead, and the Broncos coasted to the victory. All in all I felt it was a good game for us, Schermerhorn said. We learned where we stand and where we need some work. Well bounce back. I was running a very good race up until I got the cramp, Webb said. I think I would four-mil- have placed very high if that had not happened. Webb played tennis in high school, but also participated in cross country meets as an independent runner. After gaining prestige as a back-uto quarterback Ben Bubak on Dixie Colleges 1979 national championship team, Webb continued running on his own, and won road races and other meets. His success did not escape the attention of Dixie track coach Harold Norton, and Webb was offered a track scholarship. Webb went on to win p conference championships in the steeplechase and r run two consecutive years. He transferred to SUSC in 1981. Prior to participating in this years national meet, Webb said he ran three miles in the morning and four or five miles in the afternoon. I had planned to run a relaxed race, have fun and hope for the best, Webb said. I had a bad time though, and things didnt turn out the way I expected. Webb said the thought of trying out for the United States 5,000-mete- Olympic team has crossed his mind, but he said he wont do it this year. Not this year, but maybe in the future, Webb said., The Olympics take four years of serious training and distance running takes a lot of patience. Though he has not yet run a marathon, Webb said he probably will run one someday. I dont like distance races as much as I do speed races, Webb said. Im bigger than most marathon runners, and I guess Im more of a middle distance runner. s , |
