Show The Thunderbird Monday, October 3, 1983 Page 9 Senate explores better compensation for student leaders by Paul Husselbee According to Mark Wade, ASSUSC president, student body officers are not fairly compensated for their time and effort, and a study may be performed by independent institutions to suggest changes in the current student government system. Most student government officers at comparative Utah schools receive scholarships and enough money to make their time worthwhile, Wade said. n Jeff Maxwell, ASSUSC agreed with We have a hard time finding people to fill Wade. positions in student government because they are not compensated for their time, he said. If the stipends given were for more money, students would more readily accept the responsibilities of student officers. Wade presented the results of a study he and Maxwell have conducted through consultation with student body officers at Utah State University, the University of Utah, and Weber State College. Apart from financial considerations, Wade said student government entities at comparative institutions are allowed to make their own decisions without receiving undue pressure from advisers. The executive officers of ASSUSC will seek approval to conduct an independent study of the student government system, Wade said. In other Senate business, Maxwell presented a proposal to change the ASSUSC constitution. The change will redefine the office of Attorney General, changing the name to Social Activities t. The new officer would retain legal awareness responsibilities of the Attorney General, and would in addition be responsible to coordinate social activities on campus. The Senate unanimously voted to approve the proposal. The bill will now be put before the student body in a general election, Maxwell said. Fraternity involved in local pranks is Delta Sigma Chi, a fraternity not officially recognized by SUSC, came very close to having criminal charges pressed against five of its pledges when they were caught in the act of releasing air from the tires of four Cedar City police patrol cars. Officer Ron Garrett said that four men and one woman were taken into custody. However, the five were later released after they explained the prank was part of the fraternity's initiation. Garrett said the prank was serious because the cars involved were emergency vehicles. Dave Taylor, acting director of student activities, said the group is not recognized or sanctioned by the college. Im concerned that students would do something like that, he said. Taylor said that because theyre not recognized they cant receive student money, use college facilities, or take part in the campus club council meetings. Enrollment up 21 percent over two years (continued from page 1) For students who didnt take advantage of the early registration process, obtaining some of the classes they wanted or needed may have been difficult. Young notes that while some sections have been closed, it is possible to get into some classes because students will be adding and dropping. To find out what classes are available, students should check with the registrars office. If students need to take general education required courses in English or communications, they should be aware that some of these course are only able to accommodate limited numbers of students at a time. Young encourages students to utilize early registration and, when possible, to pay their fees early. Get down to business faster. With the BA-3- 5.
