Show The Thunderbird Monday, September 26, 1983 Chances are remote for yearbook return Page 43 Sec a Movie Tonight Two Locations by Nani Lii Staheli Fiddlers To be or not to be whether or not to continue publication of Tavi, the SUSC yearbook, was the question. The Publications Council studied it, the yearbook editors and staff tried to combat it with new format and marketing procedures, but the apparent lack of communication with the SUSC students left many unaware of its existence. For three years the final decision to discontinue publication of the SUSC yearbook has been in effect. During this time the 1981-8- 2 yearbooks have been on sale in the college bookstore for prices; still more unsold books are stowed away in boxes awaiting the bookstore shelves. Why is this the result of a publication project that took some $1,200 and months of work from the adviser, editor and III Campus 586.SHO Downtown rock-botto- staff? According to Tom Challis, who served as adviser to the yearbook, There was no student support. Consequently, there were no yearbook funds, which were almost entirely dependent on student body funds. Frain Pearson, chairman of the communications department who also served on the Publications Council, explains, For a number of years, the yearbook has been a failing proposition. Kids wouldnt buy it and wouldnt respond to having their pictures taken for it. He further indicates that the yearbook underwent a three-yea- r probation period during which time the editors and staff had the chance to change the format and experiment with new sales methods to make Tavi more attractive and less expensive for the student body. But there were still cases of books sitting around, he said. However, other members of the college staff feel that better communication between the student representatives on the publications council and the SUSC student body could have made a difference in our present yearbook situation. Boyd Redington, director of photo services and former adviser to the yearbook, says, There were many more students than staff and faculty members on the publications council. They should have gotten the information out to the other students, who really had no idea of what was going on and had no voice in the matter. Redington also indicated that the councils action has made matters more difficult for those presently attending SUSC and those who will be here in the future. Once the yearbook is gone, it will be hard to get it back. Hopefully, in two or three years we will have it again, especially for those who are just coming in. 81-8- 2 Movies are Great Entertainment Cedar City, Utah WELL TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR CAR 586-035- SQL!LDI 0 ARE ITS OUR EKJTER FULL SERVICE LUBE CENTER KWICK "cLufoBCATjARE CENTER LUBE, OILS FILTER $ SOS includes up to li Kdr 5qts. 10-4- 0. reg. $21.95 I EXPIRES OCTOECR 15, 1983 ' PRESENT WITH PURCHASE !
