Bachelors degrees will be awarded to 305 graduates in ceremonies scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on the upper campus quadrangle. The largest graduatstudents- - received ing class-3- 06 diplomas in 1973 according to Ward S. Robb, SUSC Registrar. In addition to the bachelors degrees, another 24 students will receive masters degrees through the SUSCUtah State University Masters Program in Education. Spencer F. Eccles, chief executive for First Security Bank, will deliver the commencement address and will receive an honorary doctoral degree from SUSC. A second honorary degree will be conferred upon Dr. R. Gaurth Hansen, provost and distinguished professor of nutrition, food sciences and biochemistry at Utah State University. Also addressing the SUSC graduates will be Gina Marie Hall, an elementary education major with a 3.97 grade point average, Amanda Blake, "Miss Kitty" to millions of "Gunsmoke' fans, will deliver the bacclaureate sermon May 28 at Southern Utah State College. SUSC's 1981-8- 2 Valedictorian. Mrs. Hall, from St. George, is the distinguished scholar from the SUSC School of Education. Anne Hatch, Cedar City, will give the commencement invocation. She and Melaney Shurtz Hardy, Faverkin, are distinguished scholars from the SUSC School of Arts and Letters. Deloy Bateman, Colorado City, Ariz., the distinguished scholar from the SUSC School of Business, Technology and Communication, will give the benediction. He will receive a BA in Industrial Arts, at commencement; Miss Hatch and Mrs. Hardy will both graduate with a BA in English. Baccalaureate services will be held May 28 at 7 p.m., also on the upper campus quadrangle. Amanda Blake, philanthropist, of the teleactress an d r co-sta- vision series "Gunsmoke," will deliver the baccalaureate sermon. Michele Ann Mackay, Ogden, will give the baccalaureate invocation. The distinguished scholar from the SUSC School of Science, Miss Mackay will re- ceive a BS in zoology in commencement exercises. The baccalaureate benediction will be given by Crystal Lee Nebeker, South Jordan, a distinguished graduate from the School of Arts and Letters. She will receive a BA in history and political science. A president's Reception, hosted by SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt, will be held at his home, 331 West 200 South, prior to baccalaureate services. All graduates, their families and friends, the State Board of Regents. SUSC Institutional Council, faculty and staff, and friends of the college are invited to attend the p.m. reception. A. baccalaureate buffet will be held following the evening ceremony. Reservations for the buffet, which will be held in the Student Center Large Ballroom, must be made no later than May 25 by contacting the SUSC 3-- Registrar's Office, Administration Building. Tickets are $3 per person and everyone is invited to attend. Questions about commencement or baccalaureate services, the graduate's marching rehearsal or the issuing of caps and gowns, can be obtained from the registrar's office, or by calling SUSC toll free extension 7715. 586-771- Eccles To Speak And Receive Honorary Doctorate Spencer F. Eccles, chief executive for First Security Bank, will present SUSC's 1982 Commencement Address on May 29. He will also receive an honorary doctorate from the college. Active in banking and finance since 1959, Mr. Eccles was elected in January 1982 to the position of Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of . both the First Security Corporation and First Security Company. Those titles are in addition to President and Chief Operating Officer, positions he held prior to the January election. The Columbia Graduate School of Business granted Mr. Eccles a Master's Degree in Banking and Finance in 1959. He graduated from the University of Utah in Banking and Finance iri 1956. From 1956 to 1958, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. Mr. Eccles began his banking career with the First National City Bank in New York City in 1959. Shortly thereafter he joined First Security Bank of Utah. 1970, he was named Executive Vice President of the First Security Company and in 1975 was selected President of both In First Security Company and in 1975 was selected President of both First Security Corporation and First Security Company. With assets of four billion dollars, the First Security Corporation is ranked 60th among America's largest banks and has branch banks throughout Utah and Idaho. "It is particularly appropriate that spencer f. Eccles be the commencement speaker in this the 85th, year of SUSC's existence," explained President Gerald R. Sherratt. "One of Mr. Eccles' ancestors, John Stoddard, was among Cedar City's very first pioneer residents." Gina Marie Hall, an elementary education major with a 3.97 grade point average, will give the valedictory address May 29 at Southern Utah State College. Mrs. Hall, the mother of a daughter, will speak at commencement exercises beginning at 9 a.m. on the upper campus quadrangle. "What Can Our Future Be" is the title of her frent R. She received an academic scholarship to Dixie College, graduating from there in 1980 with an associate in science. While at Dixie she served as ASDC Secretary, received a leadership scholarship, and was recognized as the out- standing student in home econ- omics. The recipient of academic scholarships both years at SUSC, Mrs. Hall was the School of Education nominee for the 1981-8SUSC Institutional Council Scholarship and a nominee for this year's Sterling Silver Award. 2 |
